so yesterday i was watching the news and they were talking about racism in russia which is getting huge ....with parade of skinheads and the journalists were saying they were supported by kremlin ....some members from some racist alliance were even allowed to check ID on foreigners by police
and a survey said that + 58% of the russian agreed with " russia belongs to russian"
have u ever heard about that?it's scary !:(
tathi

I don't think so,

Racism is not at all popular in Russia, and the government does not support it. It's extremely marginal like everywhere else. You're getting this misinformation because Putin does nothing to stop their rallies. However, here in the US, the government doesn't do anything, either, because that would be restricting free speech. And the KKK hold their rallies in America all the time.

Doesn't mean that the country is racist.

EDIT: Tathi: If you want to criticize Russians for trying to hold on to the land they think is theirs, then you should also criticize Spain, which is fighting its own separatists (Basque), and the Northern Ireland conflict. And you should also criticize the UK for trying to hold on to some small parts of Argentina and being ready to send military contingents there to fight.

Racism in Russia and throughout the old Soviet states(Ukraine, Kazak etc) is very prevelant for one reason. There are no other races prevelant. Most people when they see someone of the opposite colour skin dont know how to act since its their first time...as for this I would compare Russia to early slave days in the US they dont know any better...

HardTranceProd your opinion on racism in Russia is pretty much akin to the majority of "Russians" pretty much nonchalante towards its existence, if it doesn't affect me why should I care, we've got enough problems already. Its exactly the fact of not being dealt with that encourages such individuals to continue to attack innocent foreigners on the street. Take the time to read this article and then tell me what you make of this issue in Russia, I had passed it on to h0tsweetbabyd0l earlier.

http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/r...r_in_st_pe.html Marie beat me to posting it :)

What do you make of the fact that old women even hold these views, its more of the conditions in Russia I believe, but as in my comments submitted to that website reflect I was deeply disturbed about a country whose history, cultures and diversity I am fascinated by and deeply interested in. As a black person however I would not feel comfortable going to Russia and walking down the streets on a daily basis, much less pass a group of skinheads late at night. Thus my commentary to frontlineworld

"In viewing this film it was shocking to me that many of these "Russian Hatemongers" alluded to the Nazis as something wonderful. Do they study history in Russia, because if so these individuals would realize that the Nazis despised Russia and thought of them as Slaves and subhumans, yet they glorify the Nazis, quite ironic. These people appear disgruntled at society in general, when old women are sharing these views, Russia would never see me as an African American tourist, truly sad for a place with such rich history. Its time for the Russians to wake up, bigotry is a social cancer."

With that said I have seen black football players plying their trade for clubs like Spartak, CSKA, etc in Russia so you can go there, the bigger issue seems to be the individuals from the Caucusus and Former Soviet States, such as Tajiks, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, etc who are more of a visible minority in Russia.

A similar story is reflected in Belarus to a lesser extenet http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/elections/belarus/

That is to some extent the case but not necessarilly the main reason, after all Russia has had and continues to have large minority groups within European Russia for its existence. Maybe communism supressed such behaviours but when you can be attacked for just walking down the street because you are from the Caucases, or Central Asia that is telling. The issue is the problem continues to grow and parties like the Fatherland and United Russia blocs continue to have politicians who outright and tacitly support nationalist positions.

Let me make this easy for you to understand.

If you go to a Southern hole in the US somewhere in Alabama or South Carolina, then if you're not a white-bread redneck, people will stare at you openly and even make some off-color remarks, possibly. If you are in a metropolitan city, that will not happen.

Same in Russia and everywhere else. There are many blacks in Moscow, you'd be surprised... but if you go to some suburb where people haven't seen a foreigner in their lives, then you will get some stares.

I lived in Charlottesville, VA, for a year, and that is far from being the tiest armpit of this country, and yet the people there had never seen a foreigner in their lives, I'm not kidding, so I got a lot of stares and rude jokes.

Moscow is a metropolitan center and one of the most exciting and interesting cities in Europe. Its nightlife EASILY eclipses even the Big Apple's. I can assure you they have enough diversity.

Ah, St. Petersburg is just a bit larger than a Southern hole if I am correct. This incidents happen in the city proper, not some isolated location within them or fringes of Russia but in the large cities. So I don't see your point there. The only point that I see is that these individuals function with ignorance that is blighting and immense social dissatisfaction.

Nonsense... you could just as well say that about France, because many Chinese or Indian Americans who travel to Paris (and speak some French) later recall how they were the butt of secret jokes or weird glances in some restaurant.

I don't buy this at all; in fact Russians are by nature very friendly. My American-born friends who travelled to Moscow said they were very surprised by how many great friends they made (and how many beautiful girls they dated, but that's another topic...)

I think you are mixing up two different arguments on this subject matter. Hate crime in Russia has increased tremendously, the government does little to deal with the issue of it, Jews are the first to be mentioned by Russian politicians in the Duma who hold extreme nationalistic views as being the main perpetrators of Russia's woes, these are also facts.

As for the Russian women, beauty, friends, etc. No argument there at all, there exist however forces that feel threatened by just what you mentioned just now about Russian Women and dating foreigners for example and that's where the correlation begins and ends in your commentary, after that it would go off topic. :)

The other day in Britain a couple of punks buried an axe in the head of a black guy because he was walking with a white girl and two other friends of his. That is hatred defined. The fact that incidents happen elsewhere doesn't lessen what takes place in Moscow against foreigners.

OK I lived in the former USSR so let's start with racism and skin heads in Moscow.

Moscow, has about 400,000 Russian National Socialist (Nazi) party members, they have done severl hate crimes over the years including the offings of certain media kings and journalists and reporters.

I've a Russian magazine on this issue right now. Done by a British reporter who immigrated from Russia and had set up meetings with different heads of these mobs. There are pictures where they are sitting around a table with AK-47's and 72/4's and drinking some vodka.

They also talked about certain issues about foreigners in their country and what their party represents.

Russia and the former USSR republics have TONS of minorities that are regarded as lower than dirt. Anyone, especially of Muslim heritage, is seen as an enemy. Gypsies are amongst this group. Jews are as well in certain parts, though very often hold way too much power.

Pretty much the problem is that the youth in Russia and former Soviet states gets no education and has no future, so they begin to fall into these radical groups, which is seen in many places around the world.
