ok so we're (Americans) ignorant for not recognizing other parts of the world other than our own country, yet when we use a simple state abbreviation, we're also being dumb because a ing brit doesn't know his U.S.states?

the difference is that Americans expect that everyone should know that NJ refers to New Jersey whereas most French wouldn't assume everyone knows that Nice is in Provonce. There's a certain level of arrogance that is unique to the US.... not due to a flaw in your collective characters but more due to your sociallization. |

This is not a shot at anyone personally. It is simply one of the remaining effects of the cold war. The cold war created a hyper patriotism in the US that resulted in a great deal being taught to children about the US to the exclusion of the wider world. Subsequently, much about your own country is common and obvious to you but relatively unknown or unimportant outside of the US. |

| Well if you all really want to tag all Americans as arrogant I can help you trace this back to the foreign policies of both exceptionalism and isolationism throughout the War of 1812 up until the late 19th Century. When Mahanian principles were put into place in the early 1890s and Richard Olney issued his note on July 20, 1895, reaffirming the United States' policies behind the Monroe Doctrine in a conflict with the British over Venezuela in the same year, one could trace the inferred United States 'arrogance' pretty accurately back to this point. So, if you want to hate on the United States, hate on the Secretary of State under Grover Cleveland. Don't hate on us :p |

oh yea and back on topic...any Atlanta TA's wanna throw me their number in case i get stranded at the airport tomorrow?
i just went to the airport (Dallas) and my flight was all screwed up and i would have been stuck at the ATL airport for like 5 hours, so i opted to just book a whole new flight first thing tomorrow morning...i hope i don't miss my connecting flight in ATL to ft. laud...
so yea, if im gonna be stuck there, i think all the ATL TA's should go to the airport and get drunk with me. |
