Should Toronto have cameras everywhere like in England? (pg. 3)

Why dont they just tattoo barcodes on stick microchips inside us already.

Sure, we might be safe from some criminals. But at a cost. We would have to trade in our freedom for safety.

But hey, maybe its a good idea.

I just dont like the idea of some guy watching my every move. Especially when im drunk & up to no good. :p

Cameras should be installed in every street corner.. mainly due to the fact that crime in toronto is increasing rapidly.. and there should be something done to contain this rapid growth. I am not against what jayx1 said about weeding out the problems from its roots.. but what i am saying is that what if the problem really gets out of control.. what will we do then?

just an opinion..

it will all start with photoradar....and progress to every street. I'm all for cameras for photoradar and at intersections to stop running of red lights and such. To take it to the extreme of actually fighting crime with cameras is nonsense. I agree it would probably increase the number of arrests and eventually lower the number of violent crimes but reality is....we will be the ones to pay for this service. The whole privacy issue means nothing to me...every time we walk into a store or casino we are being video taped. This technology will not be used to hunt down the minor offences.

everyone eventually breaks the law?? umm, no they don't...an incredibly low percentage of the downtown population breaks even the tamest of laws...giving you the the right to piss in an alley worry free of being carted off to prison is more important than finding a solution to lowering violent crimes in our city?? were you drunk when you came up with this angle or are you just really stretching here in hopes of fanning the flames of this thread? ;)

so you are telling me you have NEVER sped, made an illegal left turn, parked in a no parking zone etc etc? I bet youve broken the law many times without even knowing it. We all have.

well his argument is that "big brother" is going to nail you for pissing in an alley, or j-walking, or littering because of these cameras....do you really think with the amount of people on city streets and the shortage of cops that they're going to have the resources for this or even care...it's a lame argument imo...

serious crime fell 30% the first year england started their city camera program...that's an amazing stat...i'm yet to hear the stats on arrests for j-walking, littering or public urination...

They might not, but they might use it for minor things.. They have in England which is the only example we have of where cameras are present everywhere.

I can relate my own experience. I was in a tube station in London when some guy asked me if i wanted to buy a subway ticket. (I guess he found it on the ground) Suddenly i heard a loud booming voice "DO NOT BUY A TICKET FROM THE TICKET TOUT OR YOU MAY FACE A FINE OR JAIL TIME". They had been watching the whole thing on CCTV. It freaked the hell out of me and from that day forward i have been against most forms of public CCTV.

^^ would you rather have gotten the warning or be arrested and fined?

i would not have bought the ticket in the first place. I dont deal with bums offering services and anyone who is dumb enough to buy it deserves the fine.

PS jail time for buying a ticket? A bit orweillian isnt it?

That's exactly when they SHOULD be watching you. Most ppl aren't violent when they're drunk or high but there are the few that like to cause trouble and take things to the next level.

I hear ya... neither would I. But imgaine the dood pointed a knife at your and demanded cash? The CCTV would have caught that also. You'd prolly be praising CCTV right now if that were the case.

Id rather have real cops present than a camera recording every move.
