Im fine with cameras in some public places but not on every street corner where the fuzz can keep track of everytime i come and go from my house.

Why would the police care when you come and go? To them, your just an average joe blow. Sure they would have it taped, but when would they ever say "Hmm, I wonder what Jayx1 is up to tonight" and then roll the tape? Cuz Im sure it would be so interesting to watch people do random things like mow the lawn.

If you have nothing to hide, then whats the harm right?

Bottom line, these tapes are simply capturing anything that a random passerby can see. Its not private!!

I absolutely think that cameras should be installed in our city...

Not in residential areas so much but more in the major city core areas such as Yonge St, and in most intersections...

Major roads are residential areas as well.

guess you wouldn't wanna use the video evidence in court then when the cops do catch the theif b/c they know what he/she looks like thanks to CCTV.

again im not against cameras per se. Private ones like what we have now in stores. Im against the police/government operating the cameras. Right now in a restaurant for example, the tape is only made available to the police with a search warrant or permission from the owner. People have every right to monitor what happens on their own property. However government surveillance is a whole different story and there is a big difference.

first of all these guys are shooting up people in the busiest spots of toronto so they are obviously not scared of being seen, therefore i dont really see how cameras will help stop the violence.

Personally, I dont do anything I wouldnt be ashamed to admit.

For the record, im not saying that I havent broken a law here and there.. I just mean that if your gonna do something you need to hide, you should always be prepared to pay the consequences if your caught.

cameras might or might not act as a deterent to crime however what they can do is give the cops a fighting chance if there are no witnesses and the crime is caught on tape with enough clarity to identify the perps...i dont think anyone is arguing that cameras are the answer to the problem of crime however they can be used as a very effective tool in helping to combat it...

To all those who state that they dont mind being watched if they have nothing to hide.

Lets take it to the extreme then.

How about cameras in your house to make sure you arent breaking any laws there? Why not monitor your parenting skills to protect kids from abuse? Why not? You have nothing to hide right?

Sound crazy? It is. But could it happen one day in the name of public safety? Maybe, if we allow current this realm of thought to extend further.

Just like how smoking laws have progressed (regressed) ever so slowly over the years, the same could happen with surveillence.
