Steelers, Dolphins highlight 2006 opener

Sports Ticker

3/27/2006 1:47:39 PM

NEW YORK (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin their title defense by hosting the Miami Dolphins and new quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

The NFL on Monday announced its 2006 Kickoff Weekend schedule, highlighted by the Steelers-Dolphins matchup on new television partner NBC on Thursday, September 7 (on TSN).

That Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Dallas Cowboys on Fox and the Indianapolis Colts will visit the New York Giants (on TSN).

The latter matchup will feature 30-year-old Colts quarterback Peyton Manning taking on his younger brother, 25-year-old Giants quarterback Eli. It will be the first time in NFL history that brothers will start at quarterback against each other.

ESPN will televise the first "Monday Night Football" doubleheader a day later, with the Washington Redskins hosting the Minnesota Vikings and the San Diego Chargers visiting AFC West rival the Oakland Raiders.

The Vikings and Raiders will be playing their first games under new coaches, Brad Childress and Art Shell, respectively.

The NFL also announced the first Thanksgiving tripleheader, with Miami visiting the Detroit Lions on CBS, followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas on Fox and the Denver Broncos at AFC West rival the Kansas City Chiefs on the NFL Network. All Thanksgiving games are also on TSN.

I think the TSN mentioned there might be The (Toronto :P) Sports Network here in Canada. It sucks - it's very Toronto biased :D

I'm almost happy Brooks signed with Oakland - while he did throw a ton of INTs in New Orleans, the guy can still play - he can throw on the run (eh, backwards sometimes isn't all that good), but he can also throw deep. With Moss and Porter, it should be fun to watch. That, and according to ESPN, he's going in pretty cheap too - only a two year contract.

good luck with him on the Oakland squad. :stongue: . but really, if you look at it on paper, the Raiders really do have a talented squad with Brooks at qb, Jordan at rb, Moss and Porter at wr, and Curry at te, hopefully where no one is hurt . but hopefully brooks can pick up some good qb habits at oakland, where imo didnt pick up didly at new orleans .

Hehe, see it's almost sad saying that it's a good thing with Brooks in Oakland :D But that's the thing, the players you listed off could actually make Brooks look better then he has played the past few years. But then again, this is the Raiders we are talking about :D

Hey, aren't the Dolphins, someone mentioned his name up above, trying to get Taylor to play at LB as well?? Didn't he play a few plays last season there?

LeopoldStotch - you had those awesome Portis avtars, right? Haha, googled some of his interviews when he was dressed up like that - some good humor :D

There's no denying Brooks talent, while I don't think he'll be good in Oakland right away I think he has potential. He's got a solid arm, and just needs some stability in a balanced system. Last year Duece was hurt after all, and in years before that he's had some good seasons, if a little high on the INT side. (Although most of those usually a result of a few HORRIBLE games strung together at the end of seasons).

I just remember a game two seasons ago where he threw for 5 TDs and thinking wow, this guy has so much potential.

I would never want him on my team though, as I'm still pissed about his threats about quitting if the team wasn't treated better last season.

He should have realized how much gravity came w/ those comments, I mean so many ppl were in such WORSE condition than him, and a lot of them looked up to him for inspiration, and he pulled a Charles Barkely.

Its good that he got out of N'awlins, b/c he wore out his welcome.

stressed in bold, that's what all the experts have been saying . unfortunately, this has been the same news the past 5 years, and no results on the table. :o .
yeah we can blame deuce's injuries in 2 seperate seasons, and 1 year where stallworth had butterfingers the whole year, and 1 year when we lost joe horn, and another year we lost some key tight ends and offensive lineman ...
but the excuses keep piling up .. when is brooks going to fess up to his own mistakes ?
and by the way Spartan, you should remember Brooks, since he went to UofV , right ? haha

He went to UVA? For some reason that fact had slipped my mind. I knew he was from VA though cause he's Michael Vick's cousin. Just think if Marcus ever gets his together and starts for an NFL team. That family would have 3 starting qb's in the pros at the same time.

oops. didnt realize this was 'toronto based' article.

you can get any of the nationally televised games on NBC & ESPN (MNF), CBS (AFC), FOX (NFC).... the only 'exclusive' games, seem to be on the 'NFL NETWORK', which i think is a channel you need to order.

First OFF, Aaron Brooks.... SUCKS, always has, always will...

Second, Raiders Suck...

Third, Raiders and Aaron Brooks should not be mentioned in this thread... West Coast sucks!

Fourth, I'm done...lol...

Hehe, so I take it you don't like Brooks and the Raiders?

You know, I kinda feel bad for Priest Holmes - the injury he had last year, and now the Chiefs' move in officially elevating LJ as the starter. Don't get me wrong, I like LJ (he totally padded my stats in my pool last year :P) - but the way Holmes goes out just doesn't seem fitting. But then again, guess it seems every great back goes out with some sort of injury.
