Yup - alcohol is made of fermented sugar. That's where the beer bellies come from - the high intake of sugar. And alcopops contain more sugar still for the sweetness on top of the alcohol.

It takes a lot of alcohol to damage your liver. It's a very resiliant organ and can regenerate. I'd imagine a bigger side effect of binge drinking in the future will be diabetes. For example redbull has 12 grams of sugar per 100mls thats 30grams per can. I don't know about you but if i'm drinking vodka rebulls i can get through more than 10 in a night so thats over 300grams of sugar!!

EDIT\\ i doubt a gram of caffine is good for you either :p

but i think the issue is not just that smoking is bad for you, its that its HORRIBLE for those who dont do it. i hate coming home from a bar or club stinking of smoke, it makes me feel sick. i live with 4 smokers and i hate it. if you want to smoke you can do it at home, as far as im concerned its only fair that others shouldnt have to put up with it in public places. i mean if it didnt affect anyone else but the person doing it i would have no problem at all, people can their own livers up if they choose to, thats nothing to do with me... but the fact is it has a huge affect on everyone else around as well. its revoulting how smokey pubs get, i mean its like having a fog machine in there, you can actually see it lingering in the air everywhere, there is no escaping it. its not fair on those people who dont smoke. the fairest way to do it would be to have places for smokers and places for non smokers but that would mean that the non smoking places loose business, as soooo many people in the uk want to be able to smoke. i hope that this can be the start of a major cut down on smoking in the uk. itll make it a much much better place for everyone, i dont think you can really argue with that.

+ 1 i hate being in smokey rooms be it a pub, resturant, house, anywhere, it's horrible.

Just one thing i disagree with

"the fairest way to do it would be to have places for smokers and places for non smokers"

This wont work because if i'm out with a group of friends that smoke they're all going to want to go to the smoking pub and not wanting to be by myself i'll have to go and put up with the smoke...

So go to the smokers area hehe!

I totally agree with you though. Just sitting in a bar for half an hour creates a smell of death on my clothes that just lingers...i feel like a right skank until i have a chance to get washed. Even if smokers were chewing tobacco instead, that wouldn't be nearly as unpleasant for others.

Eating sugar does not give you diabetes on its own. It's the lack of exercise that goes with it that gives you type 2. I',m type 1 and I have alochopops and coke, you just gotta watch the sugar levels..

Having a 'smoking area' in a restaurant is like having a 'peeing area' in a swimming pool...

Yeah, as I said smoking areas in bars would be impractical. It would separate people and bars are meant to be social areas. Silly idea.

the BIC on saturday was non moking throughout the building and as a smoker it didnt bother me in the slightest tbh. It wasnt observed 100% but for the most part i think ppl generally went to the smoking area when they wanted a ciggy.

The place didnt smell of bo and farts as I feared it might either which was good!!
