The canada team didn't play with the one thing that canada is known for when it comes to hockey...and that is passion. they didn't seem like they even cared about the games.....that is the problem when you bring back so many players that have already been there and done that.
Truth is...canada has so much talent they could have put together two teams and probably had both teams make it too the finals if they played with the passion that is canadian hockey |

I love Joe Sakic, but making him Captain was a bit of a mistake. he's not a passionate leader and the troops just didn't look inspired. No doubt, they WERE trying their guts out but it didn't translate into good hockey like the 02 Olympics, 04 WC and the world championships we won recently. We were missing a Mario Lemieux or Mark Messier type of leader that would have put fire under their asses.
But we can't win every time. This will make 2010 all the better I think. |

Barely won russia in world champs semi final in 2005 and lost to czhehi.
Then lost in quterfinal to Russia...Just now... Can't say i did not see it coming;) |
We haven't lost to the Czecs since the 98 Olympic semi-final and that was in a shootout.
All you have to do is look back over the history of competitive hockey. Canada has won the most medals (tied in gold with USSR) and dominated the Canada/World Cups (which always put our best players in the team and not amateurs or juniors). We also have won the most World Junior Championships and the annual World Hockey Championships.
So yeah....we're STILL the best. |

1) Olympics
Canada has 15 medals to the USA's 12 and the USSR/Russia's 10. Both Canada and the USSR won 8 golds each.

2) Do you really need me to link to a site which confirms that Canada defeated the USSR in the 1972 Summit Series? There's a miniseries coming up on CBC. Also, Canada won the 1976, 1984, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups, losing one to the Russians in 1981. Also, Canada lost the final of the World Cup of Hockey (formerly the Canada Cup) to the USA in 1996 and beat Finland in 2004.
3) World Juniors
USSR/Russia won a combined 15 golds since 1974, while Canada has won 12.

4) World Hockey Championships
Canada and the USSR/Russia tied with 23 Golds a piece.

So yeah, they're neck and neck with each other in the four main international stages of hockey. But keep in mind that the Soviets always fielded a professional hockey team to the Olympics and World Hockey Championships. All those guys did was play hockey and train and weren't really amateurs at all. Canadian players were all in the NHL and could not play since the NHL did not stop the season like they do now. As a result, we sent over amateur junior teams to the Olympics which was, in no way, our best available athletes. Seriously, think of all the Olympic golds that the USSR won which Canada certainly would have won if guys like Lafleur, Rocket Richard, Bobby Orr, Gretzky and Lemieux (in their 80s hey days), etc....all the way down the list of Canadian greats.
Until 1998, the only time Russia's best and Canada's best (ie NHLers) went up against each other was in the Summit Series and the Canada/World Cups. Canada won the majority of those and, so far, has won one of the three Olympic golds in which NHL players have participated. Russia could even that total this year, however. |
