| If you are looking to dj then get direct drive Technic turntables. , I dont even think Technic ever made belt drive tables. |

Nah Panasonic are the new besterist ones.
Bet in your head you were going... no there not Technics are the best the internet says so... well there the same.
Now to being constructive.... basicly mate (orig poster) they don't have enough turning power to allow you hold the record and to keep the platter turning. Which means the record won't start up as quickly.
Also they will genrally not hold pitch that is they drift around alot which throws off yout beatmatching.
You don't NEED to get technics, though they are the industry standard. Belt drives are a bad investment. Your gonna have to pay alot for records and a belt drive will make it difficult to mix them properly. So whats the point?
If you more ment the technical aspects I'll go into that if you want, but basicly the belt which drives the platter can slip and means the drive won't resist much force. Also the belt heats up the pitch goes off and all sorts of nastyness.
And it is basicly an indication of a sub quality drive. (I'd be interested to know how many of the belt drive haters on here have actually played on one too lol) |

With magnetic drives, the platter is driven by electro-magnets, whereas belt drives are held together with a rubber band.
Magnetic drives (like Technics) stop instantly when you want them to, hold a constant pitch wherever you set it to, have higher torque, and require much better engineering. Belt drives last a few months as the belt wears out quickly, the pitch wobbles like crazy, and they have an annoying tendency to stop completely with the lighest of platter brushes. |

ME! I started on belts! I didn't realise how rubbish they were til i upgraded to techs - just a different DJing experience altogther.
They're shoved under my bed collecting dust if anyone would care to lighten me of them??? |

imo, belt drive is fine for ripping vinyl (just be sure to get nice needles)
but dont even try DJing w/ them... |

Not even. If you rip your vinyl to use on cds and the pitch wobbles it is going to be a bitch to mix.
Belt drives are usless if you want to dj. Its possible but not worth it. |
