Paul's technical skills have improved tremedously over the years, as have the technical values of his productions.
PVD does care about his fans - A couple of years back while most big DJs like Sasha, Oakie, and Tiesto didn't care that their rates kept rising especially in NYC, Paul deliberately tried to keep admission prices at around $30. Paul, like Sasha, has also played at benefit events after several disasters.
PVD has always been very supportive of Trance artists from his native country of Germany, even those not signed or have anything to do with his label. Even when most DJs favored the hot producers of the month from the UK or Holland, PVD always tried to find enough decent material to support from Germany.
Paul didn't start any label in the early 90s, instead he got screwed by one - MFS. He also could have easily evolved into more of a Progressive DJ in 2000 when many of his peers like Sasha, Digweed, and Oakenfold abandoned Trance (Oakie started playing it again a year and a half later), or a couple of years prior to that in Germany with Sven Vath and Timo Maas.
Paul Van Dyk has a weekly show in Berlin on Radio Fritz, and if i'm not mistaken he doesn't get paid for it, similar to Armin's situation when he was on ID&T Radio.
You hinted at Cosmic Baby, a great producer, but where is he nowdays? Or where are guys like DJ Keoki who used to be so big in the mid 90s while Paul's name was rising?
What happed in 98? Paul got a residency at Gatecrasher? Does that mean he automatically lost his underground credibility?
Face it - Paul Van Dyk, like Sasha or Oakie has remained one of the few constants of this scene. He's hung in there, remaining true to himself, and to the music he loves. He's always kept an open mind and played other types of EDM, but for the most part PVD is about Trance. |

even dj's who dont spin much trance anymore like Sven Vath were producing and spinning Trance before PVD played his first gig.

Sven started spinning Trance about a year or two before Paul did if I'm not mistaken, that's all. Sven's first productions were way before Paul's but they were definitely not Trance - he had a Pop hit in Germany during the late 80s with the members of Snap (remember them?).
Maybe Talla 2XLC preceded both by a few years, but most DJs that helped pioneer the Trance sound did so around the same time as PVD. |

im not trying to state that Sven is the pioneer either...
Just trying do disprove that PVD showed up one day and all of a sudden invented Trance.I read comments on this forum that lead me to believe that some actually think this way.First time i saw sven was in 96 and his version of Trance trumps anything PVD has ever done IMO. |

You're right that PVD didn't invent Trance, and it's cool to see there are members here, like you, that didn't start listening to this genre yesterday.
Sven Vath's style of Trance was very unpredictable. Sometimes he'd play entire songs without mixing them into each other, not even fading one into the other. Then again, this was at a time when many Trance records had these beat-less 3 minute intros (sort of like today's big 2-3 minute Breakdowns in the middle of the tunes).
Also, as much as people dismiss how fast Trance is, and that all PVD plays is 140 BPM records, Sven would oftentimes play records at 150 Beats Per minute (which was much more the norm back in the mid 90s).
It's a shame guys like Sven left the scene. I tried many times getting into his post-98 releases, and while some of them were interesting none of them seemed to have the kinda magic that used to be associated with his labels sound. |
