I'm optimistic.

Honestly, I do not mind the new world map/battle/non-linear story styles. I welcome innovation and improvement... something new, and fresh.

Let's face it... the old school style FF game has been done infinity billion times. I think people yearn to go back to that style so often simply because of the nostalgia. Hell, I know I feel the same way sometimes.

But the fact of the matter is, there will never be another Final Fantasy 1-7 (I list 7 because, despite the great leap in the scale of its presentation, it was still a straightforward classic FF style RPG). There will never be another Chrono Trigger, or Breath of Fire, or Secret of Mana, and so on. The only decent attempt to return to those days that I've played is the Lunar series (and hell, they were just remakes of old Sega CD games anyways). Everything else that I've tried wasn't very good (Ateiler Iris, Suikoden IV, Unlimited Saga, etc).

FF7 was everything FF6 already was, but with a less interesting story, and a more in-depth ether system. You left out FF8 and FF9 though, they were also straight-forward. FFX was the first real jump into a new anything, while at the same time destroying the traditional RPG world.

I'm not sure why you listed Secret of Mana in your list of traditional RPGs as it's an action-RPG.

The Lunar games are great :)

Play Dragon Warrior 7 and Dragon Quest 8 if you want to play pure traditional-style RPGs. Both are fantastic games.

Ateiler Iris, Suikoden IV, Unlimited Saga.... what the hell are you wasting your money on? Hey, I heard Legend of Dragoon is the BEST.RPG.EVAR! :haha:

For some good current RPGs Look into the .hack series, Baiten Katos, the Tales series, and Dragon Quest 8. There isn't a lot to choose from these days in the way of quality RPGs, but they're out there :)

IGN.com gave it a 9.5/10 and as I read it is said that this is the best PS2 RPG of the year and one of the best FFs. Uh, can't wait.

I really can't wait anymore. Final Fantasy XII has been announced for ages now and America will be able to purchase it within a few days, whereas PAL gamers get screwed AGAIN and have to wait until the end of February 2007. That sucks so much. Just release an English only version for the European gamers who can't wait and don't have a desire for other languages than English.

Februari come quick PLEASE.

Well, I was listening all of those games mostly on a nostalgia factor. On second thought, I would indeed put FF9 into that list, but not 8 or 10 (too much emphasis on cinematic storytelling).

And yeah, I know Atelier Iris and all of those recent RPGs I named blow ass, but for lack of anything else to play I gave them a shot. Dragon Quest 8 was indeed good.

gamestop has a 'launch party' tomorrow night, think I'll just go pick up my reserve then. should be fun.

So? Any word on the quality of the game?

I'm trying to decide between FFXII and NWN2
