They convienently forget about the time it takes to leave your post, and get back to it. Travel time.

There is no place where this is worse than in the restaurant industry...
when I worked in a restaurant for four years as soon as it was slow enough all the smokers would be outside while all the non smokers were inside getting ready for the next rush again.

Then when it got busy the smokers would come running back in, only to run back out as soon as it slowed down again.

Me and a fellow non smoker started a protest by sitting in the kitchen walk in freezer and eating ice cream.

where my Dad works, it's ridiculous (for the record it's in a different country, but it's a world-wide shipping company)

people there have lunch break, and then 2 coffee/frappe breaks, and then all the smoke breaks whenever they want - when I worked there in summer, I could literally just get up and go for a walk around the departments, chatting to people on the way and there won't be a problem

but since the board of directors has recently changed, they are getting stricter in terms of all that

people should worry about their own work and not worry about what others are doing at work.

hey but you know it's hard

cos why the hell should the smokers get more time off, wasting their health and all?

Last job a I worked at was for a software company, so I can't say the smokers got to take more breaks than anyone else. They may have on average, but it was pretty liberal, and no one was really keeping tight tabs on you, so long as you got your work done on time and met deadlines. There were times where I would duck into a meeting room to book a personal flight or call around for car insurance and like that, so I can't say I'm any better. :happy2:

I agree.

Do you really care that much about those extra 10 or 15 minutes. Don't smoke? Go for a washroom break.

Does this happen where you work?

I dunno about you but I feel robbed! Why do people who smoke get more breaks than I do? :(

I can understand your frustration. It didn't irritiate me, but I just loved how people said, "oh i've been working SO hard - I've done a 12 hour shift and I haven't even taken a break!".

dude. If you are taking a smoking break - that STILL counts as a smoking break.

No problem here.

When you're on a salary in a professional environment, there's no such thing as ticket-puncher thinking. If you do your job and do it well, meet your deadlines and such, if you come and go no one cares. The trade-off is sometimes the deadlines make you work late, and sometimes you have some spare time like right now writing this paragraph. It all balances out.

But, I've heard a response to that in the past when I worked the phone lines years ago... The guys complained women spend 10 minutes in the bathroom 5 times a day compared to 3 minutes for guys 2-3 times a day.

Yes! I love this type of mentality. Going from retail to a corporate, proffessional environment, was an eye opener to say the least.

Salary FTW!

My manager must take at least 10 smoke/coffee breaks a day, but she works damn hard most of the other time.
