I was just noticing today that people who smoke seem to get more breaks from work. At least at the two places that I work. Usually there's a lunch break and one or two fifteen minute breaks (depending on how long you're working). But I've noticed that people who smoke go out to have a cigarette a few times on TOP of these breaks.
Does this happen where you work?
I dunno about you but I feel robbed! Why do people who smoke get more breaks than I do? :(
I don't really care that much I guess. I sort of get extra breaks b/c I get to surf on TA most of the time. I was just wondering what you all thought. |
at my old work whenever people went on their "timed" smoke break i just went outside to join them even though i dont smoke. Nobody ever said a thing about it because i think they realized how hypocritical it would have been.
I was the only non smoker who did this btw. Poor beaten down SOBs |

at TCP it does seem the same that smokers get extra breaks but thats usualy with the managers... the part timers/students that smoke they usualy only go out during their regular breaks unless its a 4th key closeing cuz then its just slack off shift :toothless
for the town well we are outside all the time so really as long as you stop the truck and step out to have a cig it really dont matter |

I look at this sort of thing in two ways:
1) When the smokers of my workplace leave to have their cigs.. myself and all the other non smokers gain better opportunities to sell stuff ( i don't work on commission.. but if you sell a certain amount and make your 2 month quota the company i work for gives gift certificates for the store and its usually a pretty good amount usually between 80-120 bucks)
2) Being one of the managers, somtimes i'm in charge and then if i let ppl go on smoke breaks i get crap from the other workers who maybe aren't allowd to take a 'break' especially since most of the part- timers only work a 4 hour shift at once.. which doesn't allow for breaks...
so i can go either way on the subject.. but over all i don't think its very fair... but i would rather let a person go for a smoke then have to deal with a bad attitude or them getting all spazzy without their daily dose

i've pretty much stopped going for smoke breaks @ work.
too much of a pain in the ass to walk from the main kitchen to the 'designated smoking area' outside the main entrance on Front St.
cept when im on the dinner shift... and can sneak onto the intercontential loading dock for one. |

people should worry about their own work and not worry about what others are doing at work. |
I agree with you for the most part, but if it becomes you needing to pick up the slack for others blowing off work that isn't cool.

Line of the weekend for sure...
Strange guy bothering us on the skybar: "Do any of you guys have a smoke I could borrow?"
Grinder: "No, I quit smoking 'cause it made me impotent"
Strange guy gets frightened and walks away shaking head. |

No problem here.
When you're on a salary in a professional environment, there's no such thing as ticket-puncher thinking. If you do your job and do it well, meet your deadlines and such, if you come and go no one cares. The trade-off is sometimes the deadlines make you work late, and sometimes you have some spare time like right now writing this paragraph. It all balances out.

Exactly.
In my office, we break when we want, we go for lunch when we want, we do what we want as long as we get the job done. My manager is really laid back when it comes to this stuff and does not clockwatch with us on anything, including breaks. When I smoked I would have 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon but I would only take 10 min tops. I don't see it as a big deal at all and when the smokers in the office do take more then one break, it gives me a better opportunity to get my sales higher as well so I don't see this as a bad thing at all :)
btw, congrats on day 5 Sasha. It isn't as hard as you think it will be. I am officially past 1 month of not smoking now.
35 days to be exact :toothless |
