Ok i'm at a crossroads here. the more i think about school and my education, and the more i struggle with bills and living in miami (VERY expensive), the more annoyed i get at the fact that i'm paying 65k for a bachelors degree from an art school, (which is highly accredited, dont get me wrong), that is not nationally accredited. meaning, if i decide i want to go to graduate school at UM or something, i can't.
anyway...i can't afford my school and it's pissing me off. i'm content with the fact that i wasn't a typical college type kid after high school. i graduated with a low C average and was well into my e-tard phase by the age of 18 and had no desire to go to college right away. i just wanted to find some office job, get a paycheck and do drugs/party every weekend and mooch off my mom or find roommates.
now, i love advertising, i love photography. i'm extremely creative and i really think i would be a great asset to the advertising industry, but the truth is, i'm lazy, i'm not competative, and i love money. i also know that upon graduating, i will be someone's bitch pretty much for a couple of years making less than what i make now as a legal secretary. the advertising industry is no joke. it's very cut-throat and competative, but i just dont know if i have the drive in me to make it to the top of that world. i have too many other passions in life that don't require a degree...like shopping, travelling, going to the spa, nice cars, a nice crib, etc... so as i've come to grips with this, i've realized that i want to have money, and i want to have money now. i want to travel and party in my late 20's and early 30's and i want to be able to go shopping whenever i want and drive a nice car. i'm not ashamed to admit this. i've been exposed to the finer things in life, and i want it. and i want to be able to provide it for myself and even my boyfriend (hey, i'm very generous:)) i want to be able to afford having kids some day and not have to worry about bills. i want to be happy.
anyway (i promise i'm getting to the point), i've always toyed with the idea of getting my real estate license. i know a few people who have done it and they seem to be pretty financially stable and happy. am i really really passionate about real estate? i wouldn't say yes. but...i HAVE always been the type of person who notices certain things a real estate agent would, when going to someone's house for the first time. i notice things like location, granite counter tops, tile and/or carpeting, backyards, distance to highways, etc...and i know south florida like the back of my hand, so all of this tells me i'd probably be fine doing this.
should i just drop out of my school and go for it? i know my parents would be really disappointed. i think i would hide it from them at first...like until i sold my first couple of properties and showed them, "Hey look mom and dad, i just made sick money selling real estate and i'm an actual agent now".
there is also a huge part of me that wants to be able to say that i at least got some sort of degree, whether it's from a state college or a private art college...whatever. that's just how i was raised. my mom didn't finish college and raised me by herself so she pretty much embedded in my head that i'm a loser without a degree. my dad isn't a college graduate, but he's very very smart and makes 125k now working for a british aerospace company doing brainy, corporate stuff, so he's the next best thing to a college graduate and has high expectations of me. i have this insecurity about not being educated and it's my mom's damn fault. it bothers me. i want to be able to get over this.
thoughts? did any of you read my book? haha
i've toyed with the idea of doing both, but should i waste money?
sorry it was so long, thanks to anyone who read it and responds:D |

i think you should go to school...it's always good to have a degree, at least its a back up...you can pursue your real estate licence in your spare time...
everything you mentioned needs money, and statistically speaking, those with a degree tend to earn much more (over the span of their lifetimes) than those without a degree...good luck! |

i didnt go to bar tending school. ?
by the way, i went over how many credits i have n stuff, and i'm like 2 1/2 years away from my degree due to the fact that i can only go part time since i work and need to support myself. i've missed school since last fall because i owe my school like 2k which my dad is going to help pay off, but if i start going again, i'll have to pay like $350/month towards my school. that's a stiff bill to have when you live paycheck to paycheck:( i dont think i can do it unless i have like 3 jobs or some . |

It's because of lack of money that my education was a failure ( among other things being depressed because of living in Ohio when I started college ).
If you don't want to pursue a career in that field you should still try to make it a goal to try to finish some form of schooling.
And speaking of real estate, your lack of drive, and competitive spirit, are things that will hurt you in that market as well.
To excel in the real estate market you have to eat the others alive.
Is this something you can picture yourself doing when these are the exact same things you feel you can't do in the advertising industry?
Real estate is far from being esthetics based as some might envision ( namely YOU! ) but it is all about making the sale and playing hard ball with the customers and putting your foot down.
Good luck in whatever you do. Don't let your life go to waste. |

Slylee, if you're honestly barely "getting by", just to go to school, I would suggest that you stop going. You can ALWAYS go back! :) Get a couple of jobs (Or just one), and put aside a "School fund" that you can use, for school, obviously, in the future.
If you plan to keep going, with your education, then I would suggest dropping a couple of vices that may be draining your wallet. It may suck during the process, but once you get that sweet degree, you will start milking the world for everything it has. And I am talking about $. :) |

Putting school off tends to be a recipe to disaster. |

cuz he's busting his ass in grad school. and he already has a bachelors from ohio state. he will probably get a job after his internship this summer. but i want to make a lot of money now. i'm 24, i'm not like 19 with all this time to dick around figuring out what degree i should get.
oh yea and jdat, i just like the idea of having my own hours and stuff like that.
this guy my ex used to be friends with got his real estate license when he got out of the modelling industry and he was seriously the biggest loser ever. he lived with us for a month while his condo was being re-done and all he did was smoke weed all day and play golf games on play station and then have a few appointments showing properties. he would sell a condo and make like 5 or 7k and then chill for a few weeks until money ran out. if that idiot can do that, then i certainly can.
and yes, i think i definitely have the personality to sell homes. i dont think as much drive is required to sell real estate as working your way up the corporate ladder in advertising. real estate is f'n nuts down here too now. u can't find anything cheaper than like 300k and people just want to live in south florida. clients literally call you up, it's not like i'd have to seek out people. there are 10 fancy condo high rises going up within a 5 mile radius of me and they all start at 400k.

Real Estate is where the money really is. Investing and selling properties for a profit. As an agent, you will get a percentage of that profit (like 1%-3%). It's probably just as cut-throat if not more than advertising. People will always go behind your back to steal clients or deals. You have to have a strong character to pull it off and deal with the sharks.
I don't think you have to drop school to get your license. I believe it's about a week of instense studying to take your test. After a couple of years you will have to study again for another test in order to keep you license. Further on you might be interested in taking classes in order to get your broker's license, which is what my gf is doing right now in miami, although she already works at a very prominent project in Sunny Isles which is developed by the Dezers, so its really a no buisness ethic enviorment, since its a private company and they can do whatever the they want.
Also the real estate market in Miami has reached a peak and it will soon go to . I think if you want to practice real estate you should go to a city whos real estate market is rising. I have an article that explains which cities markets are going to decrease and which are going to increase. Miami is actually in the top ten that are going to decrease. Also remember you will be working on comission so if the market is low, you might not sell for months and since you don't have a steady salary you won't earn any money. So your friend that sells a condo for 7k and just chills and spends it instead of saving is pretty ing stupid. |
