| Hey TA's........I dont know why Paul Oakenfold is so popular...i think he is one of the most overrated DJs of the World......His sets are boring....i dunno......the style he plays is bad for my opinion. What do you think about him? Well on the Top DJ list he is on the 3rd place after Tiesto(1) and PvD(2). |

Here is my view on this topic. Although I have not listened to a PO set in over 2 years because of the fact that they are boring I still respect the man for what he did before the year 2000. If you have not heard sets such as CREAMFIELDS 98 from paul oakenfold, then you will know what I am talking about. Also a couple of times in the year 2000 he came to Toronto and spun really good sets. I think that some of his old fans just respect the fact that he once did make so many people happy and they go see him for that. I don't know cause I know I would never go see him. Does this make sense?
Anyhow my favourite live set from Paul Oaken is:
Paul Oakenfold @ Creamfields 98, which has 2 parts, both about 28 minutes long |

see, Oakenfold's livesets have deeper music. they are not as "mainstream" , dancy, and energetic as pvd's or tiesto's, and that's what throws most people off. other dj's play stuff like nu nrg-dreamland, funk eisatz - punk. oakenfold's choice of music is just different.
have you listened to a john flemming / paul mendez set? if so, did you think those were boring?
oaky has got some good stuff, like gu007, another world, live in china, liverpool, etc. however, i think too that he is overrated - i haven't heard of a liveset from him in a long time.
p.s. by saying "mainstream" music, i mean music that would usually be played at huge parties, raves. hope you get my point. |

Oakenfold is mostly know of his rescidency (how do you spell it?) @ Cream and for introducing mainstream to England a couple years ago. Not meaning that he plays it now... He will always be a legend in the DJ culture, even tho' his newest set's can be... boring. But he will always be respected (i hope =) because not of his tune selection, but as a DJ and producer.
Dj Dave: funny... |

| im not a big fan of PO but i surely do respect him because the fact he did do so much for the scene a few years back. to me i don't know why he is so popular. the only reason why i know he got really popular recently in the US was because of MTV. they showed him spinning live in NY and after that to the people who don't know about trance music just say "you mean the stuff that PO spun on MTV" than i start flaming them thats TRANCE MUSIC! :D |

A lot of people respect him for
a) The enormous contribution he's made to Trance (and dance music in general). If you look back at the history of dance music his name crops up so many times, he was one of the main figures responsible for bringing the old Chigago House sound to the UK and turning it into the music we're all loving today. It's pretty undisputable that if it wasn't for Oakey we wouldn't be listening to the music we're listening to today.
b) He's not afraid to experiment. He doesn't feel the need to do the same thing for 10 years just to please other people.
So regardless of whether you like his sets or not (I personally have only seen him live twice, the last time was at the NEC in October and he rocked the place IMO) it's probably worth remembering that directly or indirectly he's had a huge positive impact on our lives :) |
