why did it fall straight down? because there was a hole the size of a frickin plane in the middle of the structure, sure it didnt come out the other side...but a stell girder does not have to bend in the direction to where the most weight is, it can buckle as well...another reason why the fell straight down, is again, theres a hole probably the size of at least 3-4 floors high, the weight of all the floors above it, and the lack of structural support below it, most likely obliterated on impact, caused the top to fall (and that is a tremendous amount of weight) and crush the floors under it...i believe that as it was coming down, the top section above the impact zone forced the sides of the tower below the impact zone outward as it fell into it, of course it is gaining more weight and more momentum as it crushes the following floors. an analogy to describe this would be like an elevator too wide for the elevator shaft and split the "elevator shaft" (lower part of the building) open at the seams.
