< big ass picture >

Notice anything interesting about the banner?

The little cross with the circle at the bottom right of the banner is a celtic cross, which in recent times, have been used as a symbol of White Nationalist / Facism symbol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_cross). Now I thinking the player themselves either don't know the meaning of that cross in that form or they just haven't noticed but it's kinda messed up that someone would give them a banner with that. Are they trying to get them in trouble or is the "internet" reading too much into this stuff again. Interesting nontheless.

Italian clubs have a ton of racist fans (think Lazio). I don't think it's unthinkable that a group of those fans planted that banner, and the players didn't realise or simply didn't care to remove a small symbol. It's unfortunate, but you see tons of similar banners in Serie A games.

Strangely enough, it seems to be a symbol of white nationalism in countries without Celtic heritage :p

Latest Amendment of the FIFA Disciplinary Code May Result to Italy to Give Up World Cup Title

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Boston, MA, United States, 07/13/2006 - On last 28 March 2006, an Amendment to article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary added few lines about discrimination. If confirmed of any discrimination, Azzurri player, Marco Materazzi could face serious sanctions. Italy then may be deducted 3 points.

[NewswireTODAY FirstCall] - On last 28 March 2006, an Amendment to article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary added few lines about discrimination.

The following could cause Italy to loose the title.

Part IV: If any player, association or club official or spectator perpetrates any kind of discriminatory or contemptuous act as described by par. 1 and/or 2 of this article, THREE points will automatically be deducted from the team concerned.

Amendment to article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code
Non discrimination

Part. I:
Anyone who publicly disparages, discriminates against or denigrates someone in a defamator manner on account of race, colour, language, religion or ethnic origin, or perpetrates any other discriminatory and/or contemptuous act, will be subject to match suspension for at least five matches at every level. Furthermore, a stadium ban and a fine of at least CHF 20,000 will be imposed on the perpetrator. If the perpetrator is an official, the fine will be at least CHF 30,000.

Part. II:
If spectators display banners bearing discriminatory slogans, or are guilty of any other discriminatory and/or contemptuous behaviour at a match, the appropriate body will impose a sanction of at least CHF 30,000 on the association or club that the spectators concerned support and force it to play its next official match without spectators. If the spectators cannot be identified as supporters of one or the other association or club, the host association or club will be sanctioned accordingly.

Part. III:
Any spectator who is guilty of any of the offences specified under par. 1 and/or 2 of this article will be banned from entering any stadium for at least two years.

Part. IV:
If any player, association or club official or spectator perpetrates any kind of discriminatory or contemptuous act as described by par. 1 and/or 2 of this article, three
points will automatically be deducted from the team concerned, if identifiable, after the first offence. In the case of a second offence, six points will automatically be deducted, and for a further offence, the team will be relegated. In the case of matches without points, the team concerned, if identifiable, will be disqualified.

Part. V:
The confederations and associations are required to incorporate the provisions of this article in their statutes and to enforce the sanctions stipulated. If any association infringes this article, it will be excluded from international football for two years. Source: FIFA

Zidane is better known for his sportsmanship and dancer-like style with the ball. He is a national hero for the French and a symbol of a young, multicultural France. Born to Algerian immigrants, Zidane grew up playing on concrete in an impoverished neighborhood of Marseille, South of France.

"My act is not forgivable," Zidane said. "But they must also punish the true guilty party, and the guilty party is the one who provokes."

Materazzi has acknowledged he insulted Zidane, without giving specifics. At nearly the same moment Zidane was live on French TV, excerpts from an interview that Materazzi gave were posted on an Italian paper's Website.

French lawyer plans challenge to World Cup result

PARIS, July 13 (Reuters) - A French lawyer plans to ask a court to intervene in the controversy over Zinedine Zidane's sending-off in the World Cup final.
Doubts over whether a match official relied on video evidence of Zidane's head butt to Italian defender Marco Materazzi meant the final should be replayed, lawyer Mehana Mouhou said.
"I am going to ask the judge to question all individuals concerned and to reconstruct the end of the refereeing," Mouhou, who is based in the northern town of Rennes, told Reuters on Thursday.
"If it is proved that the fourth referee used video evidence, FIFA can have the final replayed," he said.
Mouhou said he was acting on behalf of a number of clubs and associations whose names he would reveal once the application had been filed with the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris, one of France's main civil courts.
French captain Zidane was sent off in extra time in Sunday's final in Berlin after he head-butted Materazzi, apparently in reaction to comments by the defender. Italy went on to take the World Cup after winning the match on penalties.
The incident went unseen by the referee and his two linesmen. The referee was informed about the head butt by the fourth match official who said he had witnessed the action.
French team officials have challenged this version of events, saying the official knew what happened because he saw a video replay.
FIFA rules prevent referees from using video evidence during the course of a match.
"The divergence of opinion means that the justice system should decide," Mouhou said.
"If it is proved that video was used, I will ask for the match to be nullified."
