ok guys, i came to this forum first for the trance music, but also to improve my english skills, but now i recognize that the i don't understand the largest part of the expressions made by the american or british users
so i'm asking to people who isn't english mother tongue: what are the best ways to learn english?
time ago i've thought about a long stay in usa or england, but now i think that i don't know enough english, otherwise in italy it isn't taught very well |
TV, lots of. Online forums are good too, usually people will point out your spelling/grammar errors, and watch movies.
That's how i learnt |

he seems to type posts ok, but it sounds like he is worried about speaking in real time, when you can't go back and re-edit or sit and think about how the words are arranged and stuff. If that is the case, I would suggest getting into an active IRC channel or sending alot of instant messages, something where you have to think on your feet and reply at the pace of an everyday conversation.
At my school we have an "english conversation club" where they are always trying to bring us in to talk with people who can write but are not fast at speaking. I went through years of spanish classes and could only get as far as writing it, I would rather learn French but I really have no reason to (aside from the odd occasion when somebody assumes I know the language cuz of my name), the only other language we really get exposed to over here is spanish.
Maybe you should listen to a talk radio station that is in english, you might be able to catch alot of the expressions we use by doing something like that. Talk radio or comedy or lectures or something that is not enjoyable unless you can understand the words, music and TV you can get lazy and not bother trying to understand because you get so many context clues. |

tnx a lot, i'll start to listen some radio programme (now i listen only ASOT :D )
@unwordly: yes i'm feeling not ready to do a conversation, because to write here on the forum i can edit the phrase, think a lot what i have to write, read the vocabulary if i need a word that i can't translate in english. all things that obiuvsly i can't do in a real time conversation |

| are there any universities in your area? you could go and put up an ad or something and find an english speaking student that is learning italian. i did that when i was in germany and we would talk half english half german. it helps with your fluency and to feel confident in the language. |

i've big troubles especially in listening: every time i meet an english people, i always ask him to speak slowly, because i hardly understand what is saying |
Your English looks good enough for you to come here. Even if you're not a good speaker you will learn mucho rapido :p . I don't know about the other cities but New York City is great if English is not your first language, no matter where you're coming from.
Try taking a private English course in Italy. No matter how much you learn though, immersion is best. |

Well, English is my second language. I believe I speak it fluently, but still have a lot to learn. I'll also be taking AP English Language this coming year. Well I've been taught English since I was around 4, (now 17) so I guess your best bet is to go to a good English school. |
