P.S. based on your trite and gag-inspiring sig, I'd venture to guess you're what, 12 - 13 years old? If so, then it explains it. |
Actually im 22 and a enthused producer/dj, so before you open your mouth think about what your saying. I apprciate music for what it is an the ideas i get from it. I respect what paul van dyk does, hes been doing this for years playing the same tracks numerous times throughout some mnay sets over the time. Take it for what its worth your going to see an amazing performer an this was a performance with a live drummer. and he experimented with new things, he always has experimented thats wat he does. |

was the worst set and event i've ever been to in my entire life. music was terrible. live drummer was frequently off, i just don't understand how anybody could have enjoyed that. HIS DIED SATURDAY IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS SET. that's just terrible. I can't believe it, must be embarrassing. Or maybe he doesn't give a . Every time I've seen PVD it seems like he doesnt give a anyways. its a paycheck.
if you want to see a real show, see armin. real emotion, and actually good music. tiesto is good too. actually, almost anybody but pvd. i went this year and last and will definitely never waste my money on that ever again. if you think this event was even satisfactory, chances are you've never seen anything good. |

i think it was satisfactory and maybe you are right...in the 5+ years i've been a part of TA I haven't seen anything good! ok I lose!
but take these words of wisdom through out your clubbing life and experience that the word satisfactory in terms of how he preforms, the audience he draws, and the amount of production dollars that go into his set up did impress me in comparison to Armin's Tobacco Warhouse fluke. Both were decent parties but neither deserved the words you just expressed.
To me it was a real show because
A - he showed up and preformed
B - production and sound was above par
C - people came, danced, and cheered
That's pretty much a real show if you ask me.
As you begin to see show after show, venue after venue, you learn to accept that this is this DJs niche, this is who he is and what ultimately captivated me you and anyone else. You'll learn to not compare and/or expect anything from the DJ. Your opinion has a lose translation of disappointment. I think you need to see more shows to understand what's going on here. |

This post made me think about PVD's set in an attempt to sum it up with one word - and I came up with "fresh". It was just that, a refreshing set of various musical styles blendig together in an energetic mix that kept most of us dancing and smiling. I mean he went from melodic proggy stuff that had summery chill tracks, to more funky prog with mean basslines and deep grooves, then he exploded into full on trance mixed with dark tech tracks. His music was off the wall, it was so original. Yeah, I saw armin at the tobacco warehouse, it was a ing ASOT episode, but longer. But all he played was either asottish prog or asottish trance - wow, how awesome. PVD, on the other hand, isn't afraid to diversify his set with funky house even. I mean house sucks by itself, but when placed properly in a banging set, it can really add some serious groove to the party. And that's exactly what PVD did. You can't lie - it worked for most of the people at the party. I mean I remember strangers all around me saying like "wow" and "this is incredible" all night long. I didn't hear a single "boo" or "play something else" comment. The show was something else, and I really do feel sorry for people who didn't click with the music and atmosphere that day.
What's surprising is that I'm a real trance fan, I love uplifting, epic, energetic trance. More than anything else. More than tech, dark, or prog trance. DEFINITELY more than house. But PVD managed to encorporate all of those styles in one set (maybe 30% of it was actual uplifting trance), and I thought the whole -set- was amazing. That just shows how the man can bring variety to the table in a fresh way, making you love the music itself, not its genre. |

Yup... you're right
I've been going to EDM shows since 96, but you're right, I have no clue what a good show is...
Oh yeah, could you please define 'good' for me, because my opinion is clearly not shared by you, therefore I must be wrong. Thanks |

This is the best post yet. Thank you for saying these words. After 8 years of this, I agree with you 100%. Nuff said |

Can someone explain to me why when people write negative reviews, lots of people take offense like that person's personally criticizing them for enjoying it? Does everyone have to agree with you for your opinions to be validated, otherwise you wonder if there's something wrong with your hearing/perception/etc? Half of the time, I don't even really bother to write reviews anymore if I don't have the ambition or time to fight off the impending bitching about me as a person because I disagree with someone. Even when I do, I tone them down if you can believe it.
I've seen PvD probably 10 times in the past few years and the two Central Park shows (2005 and 2006) have been my least favorite musically. I enjoyed Roseland a few months ago and Roxy last fall. I don't know what it is about the outdoor gigs, because I enjoyed Ultra Miami in 2005 in the sunlight, but I have yet to enjoy one of the big outdoor productions in NYC. Hopefully Ultra with Digweed, Junkie XL and Soulwax will change that.

Even I wouldn't boo what he was playing, I'd just leave if I were that fed up. As I said originally, I thought he started out well, but then lost me. I stuck it out though, hoping he'd return to form, but it didn't happen. I will say, and the few of you that I ran into later on can confirm, that I was saying as it was happening that I thought his mixing sucked. Barosoap can definitely confirm and she wasn't arguing about the instances I'm talking about. And the worst part of me complaining about some of the tracks he played, like Alter Ego - Rocker, is that I love that track. It just didn't belong there in the set, and ended in like 2 minutes to lead into one his productions that I hear out every time I see him. |
