Maybe it's because the only time I listen to trance is when he's in town, but there seemed to be tons of great, fresh tracks with the right amout of classics. Great energy, the place was going nuts the entire night, I thought his mixing was pretty spot on, don't understand what everyone is talking about in that regard. And I've never seen Paul so animated, looked like he was having a blast. Can't wait for tonight.... |
Yeah Paul was deff having a good time...... |

Of course he was having a blast - he just got signed up for radio show on sat radio. A steady source of income, just in case this "ableton" thingie doesn't work out.
I'm glad I didn't go, based on majority of reviews. Tho, I am going tonite and I hope he brings his A-Game or me and Paulie will have to have a little chat.
Anyone wants to wager that PvD won't be #1 DJ this year? It definitely has been year of The Armin. AvB for President in 2008! We need another Van Buuren in the White House. I'll definitely attend his inaguration set. :D |

Choosing Ableton for his gigs is also not a fault of his, avoiding a type of equipment because of the error chance is just silly. cds skip, needles jump, lappys crash. As far as Ableton "doing the mixing for you", that is irrelevant. He is not mixing with Ableton. He is layering multiple tracks and samples to create music on the fly. Yes to the regular joe this all sounds the same because they have never heard the original track to begin with. However, from the DJ perspective, it gets boring mixing in and out of tracks after you have done it for over a decade: he's keeping himself from getting bored, and at the same time giving the hardcore fans [TA] something new to listen to. Hope that confused you silly. |
First of all..

This is all the dude said. He didn't mention a specific error or what he was talking about. Hence, confusion about how the phrase "not his fault" applied to Ableton when Ableton is EASY STREET.
P.S. I know how Ableton works, dude. I can hear layering too, it's not only for your special little DJ ears. And it's led partially to the downfall of PVD (well, not only that, but just that the music PVD plays sucks in general  ) and, what upset me more, Sasha!! And sorry, playing the same boring tracks PVD always plays, but now LAYERING THEM, is not gonna make it more exciting. Wake up!! Take an example from Zabiela!
It's not all the DJs' fault. Ableton is almost a necessity today so that DJ's can feed our little ADD minds and not bore us with simple track-to-track transitions. Soon people will be switching tracks every 30 secs. |

Yeah, probably not.... He's had a pretty steady, lucrative source of income for years now. I don't think the radio show had anything to do with his mood. |

I'm baaaack :happy2: where WAS everybody?
Anyway, all I have to say is:
THE FREAK PRESENTS EXO-ABOVE THE CLOUDS!!!!!!!! I screamed like a little bitch. That was amazing. P.S. - That was 1 or 2 songs before For an Angel/Time of Our Lives finish. Don't know if it was Mark Norman remix, or extended, or he just ed with it, but I was freaking.
People DID look like freaking noobs, passing out at 8 o'clock-pussies. And what was that U2-With or Without You mix? |

part of me almost doesnt want that to happen because of this strange curse that being voted #1 has on dj's that i like (aka tiesto and now pvd).
maybe it is just me but i see people in this threads and in other pvd review threads talking about him playing "hard" tracks. i just dont get it. when i think of hard tracks i think of the stuff he used to play like:
dreamland
club attack
desire (4 strings mix)
M (above and byond mix)
sun decade - i'm alone
modulation - spirits
st john vs locust - mind circles
(this is only a few tracks that i looked up from the rips of his livesets that i have collected over the years)
this stuff he spins now just isnt hard. the buildups suck, the melodies are just meeh. he sounds nothing like he used to. you could say "he just changed his style, it evolved and maybe you should to." I'm sorry i just dont feel that way. i know that trance doesnt sound like it did 4 or so years ago, or even further back then but there is still good stuff out there. i mean look at the last 2 1/2 hours of armin's brooklyn set. awesome energy and songs that werent as slow as 100 bpm. i would have killed to hear a song like lift, exactly, or even arisen last night.
i just cant believe that i used to love pvd so much when i first started going to see him live back in 02 and he plays like this now. last night was the final straw, i'm done paying $30 and up to see him when he comes here.
i can understand the first 45 minutes of last night being a more mellow tempo begining because a: it's daylight and b: cause of that drummer playing along to the music. by about 7 or so he had lost me. i kept saying that all i wanted was for pvd to give the drummer a nice 5 minute solo and then get him the off the stage. ok a interesting gimmick having him play live, yes but not the whole night.
pvd may not consider himself a trance dj, but that is what made him famous. he needs to go back to that. i just dont consider what he plays trance anymore. very little of what he played last night had that "trancy feel" to it that you would get when he used to play NY. i have talked to people that have seen him recently in berlin and elsewhere besides here and say he plays completely different. why did he stop playing that way in NY?
overall if i had wanted to hear the tempo of the set that was going to be played last night, i would want to hear that stuff sitting at home, not when i am out trying to dance.
i'm glad that some of you had a good time. i wish i did. seems like i have said that too much the past few pvd gigs that i have gone to. |

| Wait, I forgot to mention: Dogzilla-Without You :D always a crowd-pleaser, except...I was the ONLY person singing along. Oh, and just from a drummer's perspective, that ing ROCKED! I wish that was ME on-stage! But, I'd kick more ass ;) |

none of those are hard at all. as for pvd not playing a lot of trance, i feel like thats almost ALWAYS been his style. especially in nyc. whenever i've seen him spin, he'll play mostly techy, tribal stuff, and throw in the trance tracks in between all that. sometimes he'll go on a lil trance run and spin 4 or 5 together, but he usually doesn't go trancy much longer than that, ever. i agree yesterday didn't have too many uplifting tracks though.
re-reading your review, i think you have a misunderstanding of what a "hard" track is. lotta people seem to be stuck on the idea that pvd only spins trance. sure if you listen to his politics of dancing cds, and even his own productions, all are very trancy. i've never found his livesets to have that very trancy feel imo. |

| disappointed in the entire experience. i got there at 4:30 to wait in some long line got transfered to another line then back to the first then another line then another line. The beginning of PvD's set wasn't aweful, but I spent a majority of my time talking because the music did nothing for me. Forced myself to go out on the dance floor a couple times and that didn't work(at one point got all the way to the front and got beer spilled on me ). I found myself yawning and towards the end of my time there sat on a bench talking on the phone. The lazers were good but my so-so wine spritzer was the highlight of the evening. I left at 9:00 and I really should have left ~7:30. |

i was waiting on the 45 minute br line when he dropped it. couldn't leave the line though... fluids must be drained! |

so what would be a good word to describe those types of tracks? i guess hard comes to mind for me because the bpm is up there and they are uplifting.
and as for him not playing trancy, his gigs at soundfactory, exit, and roxy in 02 felt very trancy to me. i felt that a good part of his sets then would be trancy and then for an hour (or two depending on how long his set was) would be tribal and breaks type stuff. if you listen to the set that was recorded at roxy back in nov of 03 (i think), he starts out with a lot of uplifting stuff and then from 4-6 he went with more down tempo stuff before banging it out again from 6-8.
for the record the original tpod is a great pair of discs (as already everyone knows), but i wouldnt want to hear a lot of the stuff from the first disc when i am out at a club because it is too slow. that tempo is for sitting at home or in the car. the second one is more of a liveset feel.
so i might be wrong about what a hard track is. give me an example or two of what a "hard" track is so i can clarify what exactly i like. |
