can't say I'm surprised...

but you know as well as I do that the circuit/gay scene is absolutely *dead* in Toronto (and arguably has been for some time) ;)

it's unfortunate...but the producers and promoters are doing *nothing* new...it's the same old, same old...and younger people simply don't identify with the scene as it currently exists so the crowds will continue to age and shrink.

what club night is even doing "well" in the scene? Buddies pop/top 40 nights on saturdays and Grapefruit retro nights at Fly...that's pretty much it, I think (?)

it's very sad to see...but until someone ponies up some cash and brings in some new talent, or at least does something remotely innovative, the boys will continue to disperse to various regular parties at places like Guv, Sonic, TIL, etc. where there is *far* better music and a better vibe.

LMAO

Definitely not a party you would want to go to if you don't like topless men.

I don’t see this trend as being sad at all. Quite the opposite, I see it as being the natural evolution of things.

Exclusive gay clubs originally came into being because of intolerance. Times have changed and now gay people are finding greater acceptance in the broader community. To celebrate this new-found acceptance, the younger gay people are abandoning the exclusive gay events, like circuit parties, for clubs and dance music events that cater to mixed gay and straight crowds. Gay bars and gay night clubs are no longer as necessary as they once were and this is showing up in the number of gay establishments that are either closing down or losing attendance at a rapid rate. Exclusive gay events/clubs tend to ghettoize gay people and do nothing to advance acceptance within the larger community. Exposure and co-mingling serve to advance acceptance and mutual understanding. Not only that, but exposing more people to different musical genres should help to advance the EDM scene generally.

It is a win-win situation as I see it.

"The Circuit is a series of gay dance parties that are held around the world. A circuit party gives us the chance to escape the pressures of our day-to-day existence and to enter the altered world where friendship, dancing, love, spirituality and self expression are celebrated.

When The Circuit comes to town, that town becomes an instant gay ghetto full of men. Groups traveling from all across the country enjoy the festivities, sightsee and engage in different events from skiing to river-rafting, all scheduled around large dance events.

This is a big part of the attraction of a circuit party - it gives us the opportunity to take over entire sections of a city, making the restaurants, hotels, and streets into queer spaces. Many cities are developing parties which emphasize the assets of their local community, from gay ski weekends to an escape to South Beach in the middle of the winter. From a party at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal to a spring celebration in the middle of the desert. This trend is now expanding to international destinations as well.

The T.O. gay community (male) is full of narcissistic bitches! It's not a welcoming community at all. I came from San Francisco to Toronto, and couldn't believe the attitude of these gay guys!
I go to Fly nightclub once or twice a week, and I'm happy to have it. It is true; the promoters don't try anything new.
I almost feel more comfortable in a straight club than I do in a gay one because Toronto gay men are so judgmental. The West Coast is so much more laid back!
I try to get my friends to go to the Guvernment events, but they always say no! I'd hope they would begin to love the special events at the Guvernment because they are wonderful (like “Labor of Love”).

Just curious, why would you continue to go to Fly “once or twice a week” if you find the guys have bitchy judgemental attitude, the promoters don’t try anything new, AND that you feel more comfortable in a straight club?

That is a good question!
Fly is closer to my house (walking distance), the Guvernment is not. I believe that the Guvernment plays alot of tech house. I prefer even the gay circuit/house music to tech house. American house is superior to all house music though.
