when I lived in manhattan i drove stick and i sat in stop and go traffic from 30 minutes every day to go 1 mile and driving the manual wasn't a problem. i think driving manual is just a matter of preference.
i have a passat (2001, 1.8 T, manual) with 100,000 miles on it and i haven't had any major problems (aside from those related to me hitting things). i may or may not but another vw for my next car, though it's likely i'll upgrade to a nicer german car. |

BMW doesnt own them (here is a simple chart to show who own who, its a bit outdated but still helpful). THe only other car BMW tolerates on its production lines in a porsche (saw it myself on a visit to the BMW factory in Munchen...my high school had some awesome field trips :D) And you cant really blame the car makers for sticking a different body shape on the same chassis, everyone does it to cut costs (new focus = new mazda 3, new chrysler 300C = 11 year old mercedes E class ...)
A Phaeton and an A6 are completely diferent cars. A Phaeton and a Bentley GT / Bentley Flying Spur on the other hand are basicly the same, the only difference is that they stuck a couple of turbochargers on the bentleys to make them go faster than a VW :D |

Cars can be used differently in different countries and thus have their strength and weaknesses.
German cars are not that good when it comes to automatic transmission since noone uses this in Europe. On the other hand they are superb when it comes to high speed and how the cars behaves (and the safety features...) at high speed that you simply don`t drive in the US.
I wouldn`t want to drive a Honda or Toyota with >200 km per hours on a german Autobahn. On the other hand I don`t know if I wanted to drive a BMW on a US highway, because the requirements are different. |

You americans need to learn to drive manually.
I mean seriously, not only are u guys using more petrol than anyone else in the world by using automatic..u actually need to invade other countries to drink up more fuel.
VWs and Audis (I'm not mentioning BMW cause they're overpriced, have poor mileage, and bmw drivers are usually s), are probably the best cars in the world.
My brother drives a passat, and its as solid as can be. The audi A8 diesel car for example. Probably the best fuel based car in the world. Though a diesel, its as silent as a mouse and its fuel consumption is out of this world. Not only that, it has a V10 engine. Not mentioning its flawless look.
Only zee germans can make cars like that. Practical AND fun at the same time. |

ok but the average person isn't really into (and doesn't have time and money for) the high maintenence that you guys are claiming comes along with owning a german car.
i understand the over-engineered part is for peek performance, but like someone mentioned in here, when do you actually race a porsche or an audi? seriously. people generally get cars to get from point A. to point B. in life. i'm not saying u should have a piece of crap for that reason though. if anyone needs to have a car to be proud of, it's me. i like having a nice car, and i'm guilty of wanting a status symbol. but i also want something that can take a beating and some milage with a smile.
do i give my car fuel treatment and take care of it like a guy would? no. i do my oil change at the last minute and same with brakes. but i mean, the fact that the lexus/toyota can tolerate that gives it more points with me. oh and btw GM just merged with toyota so now a lot of GM cars will have japanese parts.
when i said over-engineered, i just meant like it took 3 extra steps to change the spark plugs in my car than say, even a bmw. i know this because after high school i drove a cute little red 89 bmw 3 series and i had an oil leak problem, so i had to change my spark plugs a lot and it was so easy. u just pull those rubber things off, and bam..there's the spark plugs. but not w/ the VW. you had to practically take the engine apart to change them. just little things like that.
oh and liquidx is 110% right about having to drive a lexus to appreciate it. i'm telling you right now, the japanese know about gadgets and luxury. i lived in japan about 7 years ago and even back then, the minivans over there had TVs in them and heated seats and every little thing you could think of that people in the US are just now coming out with. we're so behind... |
