so, my kitty made me sad last night.
right before i laid down to sleep, i started breaking out in hives and got all itchy. i figured it's from the kitten since she insists on being on me (my shoulders, tummy, lap, etc) whenever i'm home. anyway it affected my shoulders, arms, back, tummy, legs, butt... freakin' all over! i was too lazy to take a shower so i put her in the bedroom and fell asleep around 10pm in the living room.
then, at like 1am i wake up and my fingers and hands were all swollen and sore. i couldn't make a tight fist and all my joints were sore and cracky. i got up to wash off my hands with antibacterial soap, and i was going to jump in the shower, but as soon as i stood up i got completely nauseous and dizzy... so i ended up just passing out on the couch.
i've never been allergic to cats before and i've had cats pretty much my entire life. but after a bit of googling, it turns out that kittens cause more allergy symptoms than adult cats do, especially in the spring and fall... and orange cats are apparently the worst!
i feel much better today but i'm so afraid to let her sleep on me 'cause i don't want to experience that again. i tried giving her a little bath this morning with a wet washcloth, and when i take her to the vet tomorrow i'm going to ask them about it.
hopefully this gets resolved so i can snuggle up with my baby! :(
edit // i'm gonna go pick up some kitty wipes after work. i just checked to see if Petco or Petsmart carried anything to help reduce allergy symptoms related to cats and they've got all sorts of wipes that will help with the dander!
yay. :) |

I have two orange cats, Milton and Sherman. They're going to turn 8 rather soonish, but i've had them since they were tiny kittens. They are the biggest troublemakers in the world, the s!

That sucks :( I'm allergic as well but not nearly as bad. If they come in contact with my face it gets really itchy for hours for some reason. It could be from there oil that makes me itch that and the face has sensitive skin. |

was your kitten a stray? where did you get her from?
maybe she has a skin disorder or scabies or something.
does she have crust on her skin? |

I think Waldorf and Stadtler would be more appropriate names for your cats.
If you don't know who those two are...Google it. :p |

Scabies isn't contagious, and it isn't bugs. It's a vitamin deficiency. So you can rule out scabies. :p |

she was a barn cat, so i'm sure that might be part of the problem.
her skin/fur/nails/mouth/ears look and feel fine. i checked her out this morning to see if i could notice anything wrong with her, but she looks and smells healthy! when i take her to the vet tomorrow they're going to give her an exam too so i'm sure if anything is wrong they'll figure it out.
i've been googling for info and it seems that the allergies are caused by the dander, shedding hair, and saliva... which makes total sense since i was petting her a LOT and letting her lick my hands all over last night.
i'm gonna pick up some kitty wipes for her, vacuum/dust my apartment, and wash all the clothing/sheets/blankets she's touched. hopefully that will take care of the problem.
then i will cuddle with her for hours. |
