Thats what I meant by historical similarities....

There is no irony in my two statements- you are insinuating hipocrisy, not irony. (A common misconception about the definition of Irony)

hehehe, i know the definition of irony...i found it ironic that you are the one who implied an unopen mind and non-acceptance when you yourself can't open your mind and accept my opinions about hip-hop and edm..instead you post that i misunderstand you and i do not know the definition of edm with no explanation...your open-minded statement was ironic because of your whole attitude toward me on this debate (and others for that matter..). It would be hypocritical if you said "i have an open-mind and accept everything" then turn around and post your posts...

These two genre's both started as a blur, and are slowing burring back together. More and more I hear much more varied tracklists and a real sense of all of this music just being put into a mixing bowl. THis is becoming more and more apparent with the sort of new electro/rock/rap/dance etc coming out these days (DFA, Soulwax, etc).

not gonna argue there because its true... like Hip-House or whatever and those groups you mentioned like to blend genres together...my point that rap (as in the ones that only stick to rap ex: nas, modd deep, wu tang, countless countless others) and edm (ex. music spun by holden, armin, tiesto, hawtin, and countless countless others) have little to no connection in their styles.

Also, as I already mentioned, these genres have MANY similar roots, so I have no idea why you are bringing that up again. I may end up just quoting myself.

That's ok Ill just quote myself:

Also, I hate using the word EDM as a blanket for this community. It's too broad and too commonly misinterpreted/differently interpreted.

just don't take it too literally ;)

I know more about the hip hop culture than most as it was something I was active in for a LONG time as a graffiti artist. I don't know what you mean by your last comment, so please explain in different words. It's kind of hard to rap, without rap. If anything I was replying to your comments about how vocal laden hip hop is/how much housetrancedancelectro isn't.

Four elements of hip hop, we are focusing on two: the rapping and Djing aspects.

explain what you meant by that?

are you saying now that you understand hip hop is dominated by words and that electrotrancehouseetc. isnt?

we are focusing on the differences between hip-hop and electrotranceetc. (God! that's so annoying...im just gonna keep calling it edm!!!!:p)

There is nothing wrong with the sound of hip hop, rap and R&B at all. I listen to a few tracks here and there, but I don't necessarily follow the scene. For example, "Grillz" by Nelly is highly addictive, most likely because of the beat. The only reason why I got hooked on this song was because it sounds good in the car with my equipment.

I think I speak for the majority here when I say this, but the reason why the hip hip/rap/R&B scene is so despised on these boards is because of its lyrical content and the violence attached to it. I've said this in earlier posts (years ago on these forums) and I'll say it again: what's so attractive in living the gangster life? Drugs, laundered money, objectifying women, violence, murder and hatred towards each other. Why should anyone listen to that ? No offense, but the people who actually do follow that scene (gangster rap mostly) only listen to it because they feel low about themselves. Think about it. You want the attention, so you'll listen to the dirtiest, most disgusting violent song out there that raps about illegal activities to pretend like you're a gang leader or some sort of mob boss. Am I too far off? Of course, that doesn't apply to everyone, and not all rappers are like this. There are artists like Public Enemy who actually do give a about the world and try to get their voices heard in political matters. There's a few Eminem songs that can also be used as good examples. I can't say the same for 50 Cent, as most of his songs simply denounce to the world that he's affiliated with a fantastic fund-raising charity group... the "G-Units". Go on, buy his gear. Support him.

Fact: least I recall, there hasn't been any violent outbursts in the main room at Aria. If I'm not mistaken, the numerous shootings and stabbings that have taken place at that nightclub have always come out of the urban room.

Devil's advocate: you could also say that there are certain 'EDM' songs that encourage the usage of drugs, such as Green Velvet's "La La Land" but now I'm being very silly, and I'm quite good at that.
all-nite-freak
well said.

green velvet is an anti drug advocate of choice and most of his songs about drug use serve as a reminder of the evils of it...and that is according to green velevet himself.(i think i saw it on bpmtv)

i don't get it,when i have seen him live, he looks pretty ed up when he is doing his little song and dance number.:p
Mitsutranza
yeah that's very true mmx

i stick to the rappers that actually talk sense and have morals about the world

david guetta is the lil jon of edm...comedian...:p

I didnt have time to add to this thread and I frankly could care less who on this board likes hiphop and who doesnt. I love hiphop and I love EDM, I love all kinds of other music too. Funk, Jazz, TripHop, Chillout, Classical, Classic Rock, Indie Rock, Blues, Latin Jazz, Samba, Kompa, Zouk, Soca, Merengue...

If you like many kinds of music, better for you. If you only like EDM, so be it. Doesn't necessarily mean you aren't open-minded but most people here could give other genres a little more of a taste.

To give an example, Danny Tenaglia at Stereo for Grand Prix weekend. In the X hours he played, he dropped everything from house to techno prog trance to triphop to arabic music and apparently even some hip hop. Danny Tenaglia is a DJ for MUSIC LOVERS. If he could fit some Miles Davis and John Coltrane in there, I'm sure he would have. Sure.. at Sundance he served the DDTT (dark dirty tribal techy) house. But his marathon sets are much more varied than that.

Ask Danny if he likes Grandmaster Flash. I bet he'll say YA...

So my conclusion is, if you only like EDM then fine, if you like other types better for you. To each his own.

PS. Anyone interested in more crossover material from EDM to hiphop, check out SpankRock, Ghislain Poirier, MIA, Diplo, Jokers of the Scene (ottawa plug), and anything Ed Banger records...

And EVERYONE find the mixtape GIRLTALK - Nightripper, it owns EVERY DJ MENTIONED ON THIS BOARD. PERIOD.

(thats a bold statement but its true, Live users eat your heart out)

who will take out his gun first to end this discussion ?

LOL

I had a kind of similar arguing with someone on RM's forum. I think he posts here too.

Allied, 99,99999% of people on this planet who don't listen/care much hip hop associate this genre to the meaningless violent stupid sexual songs that are played in most commun clubs nowdays.

Just for an experiment, if i can dare u to do it, go post a set or something from what you define as edm hip hop on the music discussion section or something. let's see what is the reaction of the other TAs on this.

A friend of mine is quite close with Diplo and Le Tigre. He was one of the engineers on Le Tigre's album.
