Actually I do like Calvin and Hobbes, however, I do find it funny that while Hobbes' views are normally consistant with his name sake's Calvin's rarely are. |
I don't know, the whole "victim of circumstance" argument that Calvin uses pretty frequently would seem to at least jive with the Calvinistic ideal of predestination. Though I'll say that's the only obvious parallel I can draw.

I also agree that it seems highly unlikely that Waterson would have intended his creation to be co-opted as it has been in pop-culture.
|
There are actually quite a few interviews with Waterson in which he openly declares his disdain for merchandising - And beyond the books, there really isn't much "official" Calvin and Hobbes merchandise available.

yup Farside rocks too.
haha my favorite Farside is this one where these rescue guys in a helicopter are looking down at an island with a stranded guy waving up at them, and there's the word "H E L P" drawn in the sand, only the waves washed away part of the P so it looks like an "F". and the helicopter pilot is saying, "no no no, wait, nevermind, it says "HELF"

One of the best strips since "Peanuts"
Although it is hardly political satire most of the time.
I suggest buying the 10th anniversary book with commentary by Waterson himself. He shares his PoV and thoughts on many aspects of the strip. |

| I've read close to every Calvin & Hobbes book there is and I never once thought anything about socio-political underlyings. |

Had it for years, his explanation of the dual realities of Calvin & Hobbes is in' ace. :)
And it's got some highly political overtones Clovis, they're just very thinly veiled ;)
The frequency with which "Opinion polls of household 6 year olds" comes up is mint! :haha: |

I think I have all the anthologies, though they're at home. Man, I could so sit and read all of them again right now, and I can't! Thanks.
My favorites were the ones where they'd be plummeting down the hill in a sled. On their way to impending doom, they'd no doubt have some deep philosophical conversation about the meaning of God or some such thing.
My dad had copies of some comic strip with a penguin named Opus too that I used to read. Can't remember the name now. |

There are a few, but it is not the main subject, nor goal of the strip.
Ones that come to mind are Calvin portraying himself as an avant-garde artist, Calvin grilling his Dad on his approval rating (as per 6 year olds polled), and the endless Calvin vs. Education struggles. |

I know they are there, what I'm saying is, (and what Waterson says) that although he sometimes uses the strip for that purpose, it doesnt really capture what the spirit of the strip is about since that really isnt its main objective. To me Calvin & Hobbes is mostly about boogers, G.R.O.S.S., building snow forts, and Dinosaurs. |
