I know they are there, what I'm saying is, (and what Waterson says) that although he sometimes uses the strip for that purpose, it doesnt really capture what the spirit of the strip is about since that really isnt its main objective. To me Calvin & Hobbes is mostly about boogers, G.R.O.S.S., building snow forts, and Dinosaurs.

To see the strip as having an objective period would defeat the purpose. ;)

It is what it is.

Here's some "thinly vieled" political satire:

One of my all time favorite socio-political commentaries, Calvin and Hobbes gives what is probably the most honest and blunt viewpoint on major social issues of our time that I can imagine, and all without being overtly "preachy."

For those of you unfamiliar, Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written by Bill Waterson. Waterson is an absolute master at exposing the hypocrisy of current American politics in a manner that neither comes off as partisan nor messianic. He does so by positing them through the lens of a overly imaginitive 6 year old and his stuffed tiger Hobbes. Their seemingly innocent exploits and adventures almost always have broad social implications, but becuase of they way they're put forth you never feel as though Waterson is pushing a political or social agenda upon you.

In any event - Any other fans out there? What are your favorite strips?

For those of you who aren't familiar, check it out - Loads of good stuff!

i think the whole socio-political commentary was botched out in favor of mindless kids humor in the translation to hebrew. we got gypped. :(

I went to college with Bill Watterson's nephew. And that guy looked a lot like Calvin 15 years after the fact. Blond, spikey hair ... no joke. And his personality was very Calvin-esque. He would do the craziest, most random ... but he was a pretty smart guy. I've been a C&H fan since the beginning and I would say whithout a doubt that this kid played some inspirational role.

lol ftw, he was the first man to use the word booger in a syndicated comic strip :p

(everyone with the 10th anniversary should know that, and for the record at one point i owned every collection ever, although i've lost a few)
the lone exception being the new huuuuge ass collection, which i still really want
all fancy and
i drooled over it :(
