You know I've been on several forums, and I've gotten into my share of flame wars, heated discussions and all out rages...and I've found the best thing you can do is laugh something off.
Humor is the greatest cure for bitter dissagreements, I've gotten out of many an argument by turning it into a joke. On the internet your sense of humor will go a longer way than any debating or arguing skills... |
I just try to ignore it and say i'm through with the discussion and not contribute any longer. That's what i'll probably do with this discussion in a few minutes because i'm wanting to go out and do something, other than sit on the computer on a Friday night. I don't get into these as much, and I have been reluctant to start or contribute to many threads so I wouldn't get into a debate or heated discussion, you never know when they will turn into flame wars. Right now I am just saying what's been on my mind for a while, and this was an appropriate thread as it's addressing some people's experience on this forum. Anyways Clovis i'm through with this and i'm out for real, bye. By the way i'm Mike, I don't think people really know my name on here (or care) other than a few people I talk to on IM or have private messaged before. |

| So, ok what's the problem? The guy (Spirit5) just wanted to describe carefully his opinion and elaborate on it. It's a music discussion forum right? You are expected to discuss not phrase one-sentence posts like "ooo yeee i love that track"(in praise threads) or " you you -tard" (in flame-wars) which unfortunately this is the case in most of the times in TA. |

Come to think of it, I don't think I have EVER read a post by Spirit5. I dont' know who he is, I don't know what he listens to, and I have no idea whether I like him or not. All I know is that I see his name on here every day, and that he will have played a rather large role in the day that the wheel on my mouse breaks.
|
Most of his posts are just endless lists of tracks. He will post a long list of tracks (usually the same ones, too) whenever he has chance. The list will usually be broken down into sub-sections, each prefigured by something to the effect of "warm uplifting stuff that isn't overdone, like.." and then "or darker, more progressive stuff like..." The actual content of the post will actually be only a line or two, but good luck finding them.
Oh, and there are the epic theses on how he thinks melody entrances him despite the trance he likes not being classic trance. And that's about it. |

You will always get those sorts. There are those who simply bandwagon on those who do well, they are said they either know very little about trance or are simply 'sheep' and follow suuposedly the 'coolest trand'.
Then there are those who believe they are in the 'underground', none of the sets on the so called 'commercial or most popular shows' are good enough. They have two main reasons either they do not want to be miss-classified as those who are 'sheep' or they actually think themsleves as the 'movers and shakers' of the next great sound or trend, maybe they have foresight and can see the future stars.
This type of comment is normally phrased as "thats old news! get with the times; didn't you know that was played by dj x in 2005 in a live show i went to?" and im sure some other condescending comments can be made here, some people may have just not got the time to hear every radio show, or scan record labels or be on forums to find out. Its not that people correcting others is wrong, is the condescending attitude that goes with it.
These types pretty much rebuke those who are the most popular and would prefer to be cool to those who don't know what they are talking about it. This is not to say that are some good posters that open avenues of EDM that you would never listen to unless they were criticising the track/album/dj you were reading, but there are some that simply spurt negativity with no sort of justification or reasoning, probably because they are the critics who are adept at filling the categories i have described.
This is not to say that everyone is fitting of any category the majority of users are not; most people would admit if they were like some sets of the popular dj's, some tracks by them, regardless of their personal differences with them and their approach, but they also like the 'not so well known' or 'underground',
Most importantly if its a good track/dj set its a good track/dj set WHOEVER the artist/dj is. |
some people really don't understand social dynamics. |

conflict leads to progress.
your utopic vision for this forum leads to stagnation (even when it allows for so called debates when both parties are interested). |

| oh, and one more thing - the main reason that it's the asot type threads that eventually become debates and/or heated flame wars rather than the obscure subgenre threads is not because the asot bunch are more respectful by nature, it's because they know absolutely nothing about the discussed genre, in contrast to those who criticize the asot type threads. |
