I saw the Wii and XBox 360 at Best Buy, both were not up to par with the quality of the graphics on the Sony - yes, I played the PS3.
The main reason for the high price of the Sony is because of the Blu Ray player, if it wasnt for that, it would probably be like 400 bucks for the system - if even that. |

or you can buy a 360 premium for $400 and then buy the HD converter for another $200...oh wait, thats around $600...

one being the price point, most people would rather drop 250-300 for a wii then 5-600 for a ps3. a 250-300 price point will dominate any product with a higher price. |
Sure. However, you're paying $600 for a system which will have great games starting in March of 2007. Sure Wii is cool, but what kind of good games will be on there in the long run? And then looking at the gfx as a second priority, it doesn't look good as the PS3. Gamecube got kinda quiet after a while with games.
The more you pay, the better the product *should* be. I also heard you can't use the classic controller on the Wii for Gamecube games. You have to use the Wiimote. Boooo.
PS3 will rule once everyone has one. |

Isn't the HD only around $100? :p |

from my perspective both releases have been properly implemented. |
if sony properly implemented their release of the PS3, it would have been on sale earlier
edit: was it originally supposed to be out in time last holiday season or earlier this year? |

earlier this year...i say properly implemented their release because
1-No matter how they released it (at this time of the year) they were going to get dominated by the Wii because the 250-300 price point appeals to more people than a 500-600 price point.
There is also an itneresting trend statistic that lets Sony look at it in smaller quantities, Sales over Days available per shipment in relation to Wii release over how many days for 1 shipment.
Sony knew they were gonna lose the buy war to Nintendo simply because 250-300 is more affordable than 500-600.
Good choice to let them go in small batches then flood the market with a million units and see people favoring the Wii over the PS3 ONLY because of price. Availability doesn't add to the equation at this point. |

Gamestop Expected To Have Weekly Shipments
I called 2 gamestops. One of them said that what IGN says is a rumor. The other said they will not be available until after christmas.
Sony Happy With PS3 Launch
The statement that will likely be received with the most interest from consumers, however, is Karraker's remarks about PS3 replenishments into Thanksgiving and beyond. "A new shipment has already arrived and will be available at retail by Black Friday. We are still focused on reaching our goal of 1 million units in the pipeline by Dec. 31 in the US."
"In related news, Nike has also created a limited edition shoe to commemorate the PlayStation 3's release. Yes, really." <-- lmao. |

The total that they're losing per premium device is nearly $300. Meaning, the value of a PS3 is really $900 (to produce). Minus the Blu-Ray player, it'd be about $500. After that, you shouldn't count out the CELL processor, which should be worth $250, by itself. So yeah... they're both expensive to produce (blu-ray diodes and cell chips). |

The high cost of a next-gen system revealed.
by Hilary Goldstein
November 16, 2006 - It was clear that the cost of producing PS3 units were high for Sony, forcing the company to charge $600 per unit, but now we know exactly how high. Next-gen.biz has offered a full analysis of Sony's expenses. As it turns out, Sony is losing $306.85 for each 20GB system sold and $241.35 for every 60GB system.
The full production cost for a 20GB system is a whopping $805.85, with the 60 GB coming in at $840.35. Chief among the expenses are the RSX graphics chip at $129 and the Blu-Ray optical drive at $125. In contrast, the $400 Xbox 360 only costs $323.30. For the first time in its five-year console publishing history, Microsoft is making a profit on each system sold.
For those wondering about retailers, it should be noted that stores make almost no money selling consoles. Retailers such as EB Games and Wal-Mart make money on software and peripheral sales.
The steep cost of producing PS3s won't last forever. In general, the longer an item is produced, the cheaper it becomes to manufacture. Over time, the cost of the PS3 will get lower as the cost of parts gets cheaper and production becomes more efficient. That doesn't guarantee Sony will ever make a profit on selling the system alone, but it can still bank on earning a hefty paycheck from software sales and digital downloads.
The bottom line is that no matter what it costs Sony to make one, you only have to pay $600 to own it. In that sense, you're getting a hell of a bargain when you purchase a PS3. |
