So what is NYC trance culture? (pg. 2)

No idea what i'm talking about? Well you clearly have no idea what you are talking about anthropologically. Beats are ancient and have always been responded to in the same way. Do you even know what a beat is? Yes it is the sound of your mother's heartbeat... the first sound you ever heard. There is an anthropological point to understanding why clubs and raves attract a large audience. It's because a beat is a safe sound. People may go for different reasons but why does it sound good? The artists may make the sounds but what is consistant in every song is a beat. Some people listen to lyrics to find meaning but there is mostly an absense of them in trance. So I guess my paper is about beats, but you must admit that electronica has the most bass out all other musics... excepting perhaps drum and bass.

wow. according to your nebulous explanation of the "beat's" origins and appeal, getting your head (rhythmically) beaten with a club must produce an equally safe feeling. i'll remember that the next time po-po rolls up on me with a blackjack.

while you're clearly very excited about your survey-level anthropology course, you're barking up the wrong tree. waltzing in here with muddy theses and hitting us up for ideas is lame.

go home. it's late and your porridge is getting cold.

For the love of god, please scrap you working thesis statement. Have you been to a 'trance' event? Have you seen what it's about? I do this and I spend very little money...Yes it is all about the beats, but you don't have any idea why....

Next; get your ass to a barnes and noble, getchurself a machiatto, and read the introduction section of "Last Night a dj saved my life: the history of the disk jockey" by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. It'll take you 15 minutes. That will tell you in a second why we do what we do. But to satisfy your immediate curiosity; I'll post you some exerpts from my and some friends blogs..

Actually; I think you have a small point witht he fetal heartbeat; but Its' not quite the same thing. I think it's more the ability for a group of strangers to get together and for say 6 hrs, go an a journey together, sharing the same heartbeat the whole way through its ups and downs.

But your getting attacked here because your confusing "trance" with "in a trance"... Trance is just a name for a particular style of music, "house" don't make you want to be in a house.. it's just a way to describe how the actual songs are composed. I'm not the best at describing the differences in styles.. I just dance them.

Ok then, club culture but rap is also played in clubs... I could broaden the paper to club culture but i'd like to stick to electro as it is a newer genre and unexplored in sociology and anthropology. I'm refering specifically then to raves and the section of the clubs devoted to trance. In any case does anyone have anything to say about the direction of this new phenomenon? Will trance music die out or will people continue to choose electronica to enlighten their evening? And will electronica become more popular in the United States as the case in europe and asia. My guess is no but perhaps others have input. Ohh, and perhaps my response on common club behavior was incorrect... trance culture is then about the beat alone and not money.

In philly...

Trancers love trance, electro, house, breaks.. especially when all are mixed together.

Housers love house, electro and hate trance.

Go figure?

I'd agree with this; but my question is why? Do you really want to learn about this culture or do you want to sit back and judge it for the sake of a grade??

Some, not all, are open to newbs.. I am.. I'll explain to anyone why I do what I do, why I love what I love. But if your gonna judge my passion, without understanding it... yeah.. porridge time.

***This is an excerpt taken from an email I received from a friend that after talking to the other day, felt compelled to let me know their views on the Philly scene as it stands now.***

"I noticed that certain local DJ's seem to do in their spare time is talk on each other on the local message boards. In my opinion, shouldn't they be doing something more positive like hmmm.....promoting positivity, togetherness & THE MUSIC? I truely believe the whole concept of PLUR & everything it stood for back then has really become distorted & lost in the shuffle of shadiness, egos, & ignorance.

I noticed over the past 10 or so years that I have been in the "scene", where there was once true unity between DJ's, now there are two distinct groups. A friend of mine explained it to me so I'll try to explain it to you the best way I can:

"Strictly Club/VIP Only": these are the ones jerking each other off on the message boards everyday causing drama. These people wouldn't even think of playing at a "warehouse party" because "underage people don't benefit us since they can't drink, & since i get paid by the club based on the bar, i can't be bothered with this kiddie rave-...but i'm really in it for the music." Sure you are...These are the guys that would never dream of even showing another DJ what tracks they have in their box because since they are "going into battle, they gotta have the right ammo." LOL

"True to the heart": these are the ones who half the time don't even care if they get paid because the reason why they're playing the event has to do with keeping alive, having a good time, making new friends, & sharing with each other what they know about music.

Sad to say, these are one of the many reasons why I have really no desire to go out anymore. I remember back in the day I used to get butterflies in my stomach on the way to wherever i was going to...now, i feel sick to my stomach because of where we're going.

It's almost like a burden sometimes because you know that there are all catty people rocking out to EDM's "Top 10 tracklist of the week", who are nice to your face but will stab you in the back the first chance they see an opportunity.

It's such a shame that has gotten to this point, but I guess that's what happens when something blows up so big & becomes commercialized & part of mainstream society.

Keep it real & don't forget where PLUR came from & what it really stands for...

Peace out

if anyone understand what i was thinking when i posted my bulleting a few monssths ago it is you :)

i truely do this for the love of the scene.

i am making a sacrifice everyday for the scene.

whistle.. sacrificed... i will be picking dj's up from hotel and bring them to the venue.. all night long.. on call all night. most likley wont be able to see anyone dj i want to but guess what guys ... i was mad about it at first.. then i thought a little deeper.

without me doing that.. on the night of whislte.. the night i have been working my ass off for....no dj's would be playing.

sure if there was a boombox with a cd in it .. i could still have fun... just like guns and roses took me on a ing journey on my way home tonight. the music makes the scene people.

the music makes you enjoys the PLUR.
on my myspace page.. it says PLUR. and i am mutha ing proud of it.

i dont care that i break my ass and dont get to play peoples parties.
i care that i am playing the music i love and sharing it with anyone that wants to hear it.

i dont give a about all the super technical babble when it comes down to it.

i only do it because i do WANT to progress.... but in the meantime..
"aint noone gonna slow me down... aint noone gonna break my stride"

i promote and work my ass off for everyone in this town.. who i rarley get to see anymore.

why? because i love it just as much as you.
and i know you will have a blast.
just as i did and will in the future.

keep it real kids... some of you are making me proud :)
others will figure it out oneday.

PLUR

I might be wrong in saying this, but may be you should consider writing a paper on some other subject. (or may be whoever will read your paper on the current subject wont know the difference either way and you still might get a good grade.) You really sound like you don't know about the culture. No offence , but you'd have to indeed read up a lot of books & hit a number of parties in order to accurately write that paper.

Its a journey, not a destination. (ColorDancer sig)
