The green leaves of Salvia Divinorin look more like oregano than a narcotic but the herb contains a natural and powerful hallucinogen.

The drug originates from Oaxaca, Mexico. Manufacturers extract the hallucinogenic property known as Salvinorin A and then replace the concentrated form of the hallucinogen onto the chopped and dried leaves. Salvia also called "magic mint" is packaged as an incense and sold online or in smoke shops around the United States.

Salvia slips through a loop hole and bypasses regulation, in all but four states including California, because it is sold under the guise of aromatic incense or it is sold as a dietary supplement, which do not get reviewed by the FDA. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Official Jonathan Fielding, MD says it can be purchased much too widely and considers regulation necessary.

"You certainly wouldn't want somebody on this (salvia), operating machinery or trying to make important life decisions or other things. So I do think it has that significant risk, that is enhanced if you don't have someone with you at the time," Fielding said, referring to the need for a sober sitter to manage a user during hallucinations.

The internet undoubtedly contributes to the popularity of salvia amongst teenagers. Many websites tout headlines like "buy salvia online," and while the sites proclaim buyers must be at least 18 years old to purchase salvia, regulating age over the internet can be problematic.

Teens who use salvia also contribute to the fascination by posting web videos showcasing their experiences. Any Google video search will que up pages of salvia user posts. The young people upload these "trip" videos for any web-surfer to find and watch.

"It is unlike any other high-- it really is a different kind of experience and kids that think they are just going to get a high from it are going to be in for a big shock because it is not a particularly pleasant drug. You really have to know how to use it and it was not intended for that type of abuse," said said Psychiatrist and Addiction Specialist Joseph Haraszti, MD.

Dr. Haraszti says while scientists have yet to uncover the affects of long-term salvia use, the drug could potentially unleash a users dormant genetic propensity for a mental health disorder.

"Salvia-- is every bit as potent as LSD. It is one of the most potent naturally occuring substances known to man and so when you combine that with the affect on the brain I can not help but think it is going to be terribly deleterious," Dr. Haraszti said.

:D

No .

I think that they should force salvia use as a penalty for possesion of other, more plesant drugs.

Oh man, watching videos on YouTube of people on it is FUNNY.

But it doesn't look like they are having bad trips, at all...lol. But good, funny ones. Then again it's a hallucinogenic so your state of mind, who you are around, and where you are prob has a lot of influence over how it effects you.

Since the experience is so short-lived, something that I would probably try if I ever had the chance and was in the righ atmosphere. But doubt that'll ever happen, lol.
