the humate remix of das glockenspiel has 5min breakdown! i fail to see how there's any groove in that. |
well I feel it, wouldn't you agree it's at least different? Listen to those dark percs underneath... I guess my point too is that breakdowns in newer 'trance' tracks seem almost obligatory where as this breakdown is more ambient, and it could be mixed very well with another track...
there's a line between anthemic and melodic and I think this stays melodic |

sorry i'm going to start off topic and get back
that's pretty true with trance of late, but that definitely doesn't hold up for older trance tracks, ie Schiller - Das Glockenspiel (Humate Remix), etc etc.
new trance lacks what they would call a "groove". it has been supplanted by something of a much different nature, i'm not sure what i'd call it. I'm sure many of you would insert an expletive here. Maybe I'll say that the groove has been supplanted by the anthem. And that the groove, that simple and complex thing that infects your entire body with a sustained feeling has been supplanted by a repetition of melody that steals the thunder if you will from the groove. It is a false prophet that leads the music away from the body, where it belongs. this is why you can go to a huge pvd "concert" of 3000 people and only 100 will be dancing, while the others are simply pumping air with fists to the simple beat and cheering on breakdowns.
If tiesto's mixing is bad it's definitely partially because of the tracks he plays. When you have these tracks that have such a blatant, almost arrogant construction they each demand that each is "the" track at the moment, and they don't allow themselves to be mixed well except over certain parts. Now I am generalizing, because I can also think of many examples of two tracks that one could play that have constructive and not deconstructive interference, tracks with complementary or identical chord progressions or really similar samples/patches. Or the other option again, if the tracks 'permit', is to mix in on the buildup of another track so as to avoid the whole buildup/breakdown cheesefest but again this doesn't work well for those really arrogant tracks that occupy every imaginable frequency at the same time.
also you shouldn't dj if you are tone-deaf unless you are beethoven or a minimalist. remember, this is music we're talking about. |
now THAT was well said, totally agree!
nice read! |

i think it's a great track. and yes it does sound different to the crap that's called trance nowadays but i still wouldn't say it's groovy though. |

Tiesto at Disneyland 05 (I think this was an EM) has to be one of the most horrid trainwreck session EVER.
I dunno. Consistent trainwrecking kills the mood of the set, no matter how good a tracklist is.
I mean, basic mixing isn't that hard, esp. if you spin just trance.
Everything is so... structured and predictable. |

| Huh - An honest discussion of Tiesto's mixing abilities on TA. Never thought I'd see the day. |

..or now. anyone who uses 'trainwrecking' to describe tiesto's mixing errors evidently hasn't listened to oakey's latest EM from amnesia.. now if there ever was a universal 101 guide on how to trainwreck then that would surely be it
as for my 2c to the discussion at hand, i saw him play a 3 hour set recently.. the first 2 hours (where he went from house to melodic prog stuff) had virtually NO errors, was all really smooth. in the last hour the pace upped to trance/tech stuff & it was only then that a few of the mixes started to sound rough |

| I saw Oakenfold at last years Coachella Fest and he literally turned off one of the CDJs while trainwrecking :eyespop: kids, if you can't mix, don't do drugs while performing. |

About his harmonic mixing... I think sometimes he does it really well, and other times he absolutely fails at it. If you listen to the transition from 'Color My Eyes' to 'Empty Streets' in ISOS5, I think this is an example where there the clashy-sound of the the synth being brought in actually makes it sound better. As it gets louder, you can feel the tension building, and it's released as the first song gets quieter. I think the reason this stuff doesn't happen more often is that trance tends to be very neat and tidy harmonically, you don't get the massive chords that you go in other genres.
Of course there are tons of times when either a lack of harmonic mixing or bad harmonic mixing makes a transition unbearable. |

Also in ISOS5, the mix between Parker & Hansen - Let Me Be and Kalafut & Fygle - Novocaine (Mark Otten Remix) is an example of a time where he mixes in early but the harmonics blend perfectly. He really made a nice comeback overall with 5 after 4, which was really boring mixing throughout. Now that I think about it, even his livesets during the time of ISOS4 were pretty boring to me. I think this is the period he has referred to in some interviews to be a little burned out after wining #1 all those years in a row, and I think it showed. He's had a nice revitalization over the last 6 months or so in all areas (track selection, mixing, etc.).
And seriously if you guys haven't heard the Oakie at Amnesia set mentioned a little while back...my god it is horrible. Galloping horses at almost every mix! :wtf: |

What?! Color My Eyes ---> Empty Streets? Did I get it right? Thatīs the worst transition on the whole compilation, completely inaccurate and disharmonic. |
