Christmas Trees Removed From Sea-Tac Airport

Robert Paul Reyes

December 11, 2006

An international airport is a crossroads of humanity; you see folks from every corner of the globe. It’s imperative that American international airports don’t contain any jingoistic billboards or anything that may offend someone from another culture.

We should seek to welcome foreign visitors — not assault them with religious displays they may find offensive.

Christmas is all about shopping anyway, and most international airports have retail outlets. Stores and shopping centers are the very essence of the Christmas season. For the holiday season airports should decorate their stores with ribbons and leave it at that.

Kudos to the Port of Seattle for removing all of the Christmas trees from the Sea-Tac Airport, after receiving a complaint from a rabbi.

From komotv.com

“The Port of Seattle says it had little choice. It says a Seattle rabbi with the Central Organization for Jewish Learning hired an attorney and threatened to sue if the airport did not erect an eight-foot menorah to balance the message of the Christmas trees.

According to airport spokeswoman the two sides could not reach an agreement before the lawsuit was to be filed, so the trees were removed instead.”

This rabbi didn’t just shake his head at the ostentatious display of the Christmas trees, he threatened to sue. It wasn’t just one Christmas tree, mind you, it was a whole bleepin’ forest of them. Jehovah bless him for being a man of faith and action.

This rabbi is an inspiration to all those who cherish the concept of inclusiveness. The rabbi threatens to sue to get his point across, and this humble columnist writes an essay to express his view.

How sad is this!! Ugh! Its ing America! I think its ridiculous... if one wanted to put up a menorah too, YOU ARE FREE TO! But if you dont, why the hell should you have to either?!?!

The way the holiday season (esp in regards) to Christmas is getting sterilized is nuts and depressing to me, a sad display of how things have gotten in Canada and the US with trying to bend over backwards to accommodate other ppl IN OUR COUNTRY who shouldnt be complaining about such in the first place. Imagine I complained about a menorah while in a Jewish country or area. Id be told to off and deal w/ it I'm sure.

IMO I have no right to complain anyways. I hate this.

I dont agree w/ the author's opinion AT ALL.

Thoughts, opinions? Anyone else personally experience such sterilization of Christmas or read about similar situations to this effect?

The rabbi didnt complain that there were x-mas trees, he complained that there were not any menorahs...theres a difference ;)

actually, I think its pretty dumb that he threatended to sue....on what grounds? That wouldnt hold up in court.

That's retarded...what's more retarded is the idea to rename the tree to the "holiday tree"...nobody has a tree other than Christians for x-mas so why the f would it be called the holiday tree?

All this retardation is pissing me off...with trying to please everyone and not offend anyone religiously...blah...xmas FTW! Hanukah FTW! Two completely separate events/holidays.

True, and still I say, what ing right does the Rabbi have to demand that there are menorahs just bc there are xmas trees!?!?!??

if the airport wants to do that, then fine, but to demand and expect it of the airoprt or threaten to sue, RIDDICULOUS!

Wow, that really is a little stupid....or very stupid for that matter. Go to any other country in the world, there are signs and evidence everywhere of where you are. What is it with the current trend of sterilizing Christmas. In all honesty, I think that minorities have far too many rights in this country...and I'm an immigrant here myself. This really is retarded.

Exactly! Let ppl/organizations decide what greetings to wish and which (or both) holiday theme to decorate too...

Neither one or the ing other should be forced, and the lack of one over another should not EVER create this kind of reaction! it really upset and pisses me off too.

Would be like me being pissed at a lack of Xmas trees over in Iraq~! Seriously!

We all must understand that in America xmas is not about religion, love and family. It is about consumerism and shopping. Thanksgiving is for all the mushy stuff.

In fact although USA is "One Nation Under God" I think God owns a shopping mall.

It's not because there are trees, it's because it's the holiday season for Jews too, and the right of free expression for averyone of all religions. The airport could have been sued for discrimination. It's the US anyways, where people will sue anybody, that stuff wouldn't happen here.

they gave in...they put them back up with a menorah and a kwanzaa symbol.

Which i think is just stupid. Put other symbols up IF YOU WANT TO not because you are forced. I would have gone to court if i were the airport. Why should freedom of speech be disrupted by political correctness?

English Rachel
Merry Christmas, one and all.

And if i were the judge id say "does the airport allow jews to work at or use the airport? If the answer is yes then there is no case here."

And id add "if you want a menorah at SEATAC that badly id suggest you buy the airport"

I have nothing against displaying other religious symbols, but i have a definate problem with being forced to.
