the reason i put 'layering' into inverted comma's is because it seams to be a very popular first suggestion on how to make a good kick. when this is one of the last things that should be done. i layer too, mainly if i want to get a distorted kcik that still has big punch - but i know that im gonna need at least one top dog kick in the equasion if i intend on getting anything thatll work efficiently on a dancefloor system.
i seriously doubt sean has layered lots of kicks to create his bass drums. id be more inclined to say he has got a nice all round kick from a decent sample cd and then compressed it to fit in his track.
id also say he probably used a attack of 45-50ms and a release of 20ms (this is what i have found most professional engineers abide by when adding comp to kicks.) |

the release shorter than the attack? i dunt even kno what thatd do, i always put my release about the length of the kick if im compressing it individually
did you mean 200ms? thats a good averange for the lenght of a kick. alittle long, like a house length kick.
anyway, DJ_KANE, theres no point in layering a perfectly good kick, why would you replace the low end or high end if its already good on both? youd probably just make it worse. if the kick already has highs mids and lows you like i dont get why you would change them. layering two good kicks wont make a new good kick, and layering isnt just about making new kicks anyway. its about making use of kicks that are only half way there, but the half thats there is good .
| quote: | | it very hard to find a track nowadays with the kick playing solo in any part of the track. | not necessary, all you need is for no other sound to hit at the same time as the kick drum, you can find this in alot of modern trance. if its a fast BPM track and the hihat or something cuts into the tail of it, you just crossfade the attack phase of what you ripped with an 808/909 decay tail. youll never tell the difference.

theres a good chance he uses a kick thats already been layered for him on a vengeance cd. he uses vengeance loops for sure, so its pretty likely. like 80% of vengeance kicks are layered/crossfaded. |
