If we're talking about modern tech-house, i.e. stuff released on Poker Flat, music by Maetrik etc, then the general idea is that the house groove and speed is retained, while the track is given a techno edge. It isn't necessarily stripped-down at all, and while it may be full of glitchy sounds and clicks, that doesn't make it minimal techno. It's the same problem as with "electro" house. Just because it has a dirty bassline, doesn't mean it's electro.
It's hard to keep the terms apart because so many labels release both tech-house and minimal records. For old school, truly minimal sounds, go for Daniel Bell, Moritz von Oswald, Mark Ernestus, Wolfgang Voigt under his Studio 1 alias, and of course, Richie Hawtin. Nowadays, the M_nus crew are keeping most of their records close to the "original" minimal, so you can't really go wrong there.
Once you start hearing open hi-hats, full kicks, or any sounds that are working really hard to grab your attention, it's no longer minimal, now is it?
And for the record, my favorite minimal set is Richie Hawtin @ Maida Vale 10-03-04. Just pure grooviness, no nonsense. It does get a bit "maximal" at the end though, with Audion - Kisses, and such. |
Pretty good post this imo.
As for the maida vale set, it's baws oot quality. First 30-40 minutes of it are the business. |

Maybe not, but after seeing John Dahlbäck labeled as such, would you be surprised? |

| Some of Maetrik's most recent tracks sounded minimal to me. But not the tracks from 3,4 years ago like Excursion and En Mi Mente, which by the way are both totally ing awesome. |

To me, yes. It is like the anti-climatic, deadening of sound. I've become immune to it unless there are layers upon layers upon layers. Sometimes I can listen to Basic Channel, Maurizio, Pole, Rhythm & Sound, Scion, Fluxion, Theorem, Vainqueur, MRI, etc. & that's about it. And then all that eventually bores me.
but there is this Jan Jelinek album in which jazz sequences, movements, etc. are looped and arranged. Here. Pretty spiffy.
Otherwise, this gets so old. Fast. I'm just waiting to hop onto the next bandwagon, go for a ride and then throw myself off. |
