He seemed pretty chill when I talked to him a few times...everyone says stupid now and then :p |
For sure m8 - Loads of people have told me they've enjoyed puffing with him and he's not a bad character at all - But some of the soundbytes/quotes I've heard/seen from him really make me cringe.
I'm sure he's a great guy, but perhaps has a bit too high an opinion of himself as an artist. |

Well, I cant really blame him, given the amount of absolute muppets releasing tracks these days and the sorry state of the DJ mag poll... :stongue: |

The problem with labeling things tech house is the tech house that was being made 10-15 years ago which stemmed from detroit techno, is nothing like a lt of what's popularly known as tech house today, however it still exists under the name tech house.
Guys like tripwire and onionz aren't making pokerflat style tech house, but they still make tech house.
So it's confusing. |

Yeah, but his stuff isn't even **THAT** much better these days. It's as if he's reached the point where the outcasts in high school become goth kids or whatever, just for the sake of being different.
Maybe if he got over himself he'd go back to producing some quality work again :p

You could say the exact same thing about any "genre" of EDM. |

| Thats what happens when we have 10000 and one digital purchase sites. There was more quality control some time ago. These days, if a label doesnt sign you, you start your own label. It was a pretty big deal to get signed before, because it cost money to put out that piece of wax. The digital thing, which is a great resource and puts great music at ones hands, also has the market saturated with poor quality tracks. |

Yep, but I think more people are buying quality tracks too. Less DJs are really working it to get an original sound...they prefer to follow the download charts... |

Ugh, sad but true, and Beatports top 10 makes me cringe ;) |

There are still those of us out there who take our time ;)
I imagine the kind of jock who follows the download charts/big tunes is also the kind of jock who tires of DJ'ing rather quickly - After all, it's only so long before they've got mixing distilled down to a math equation they follow for each and every mix. I'd get bored quickly |

True, but it's especially weird with tech house because todays tech house and the tech house of yesterday show VERY FEW similarities.
And the fact that lots of people STILL spin the "old school" tech house. It's not some passe niche thing. It's an active community with lots of vinyl releases (especially in the USA (east coast deep/tech and west coast tech)), arguably more vinyl than "today's" tech house.

Trance, circa 1993 vs. Trance, circa 2007. |

The main difference between these is from what I know, there aren't a lot of "famous/well known" djs touring today still playing sets full of 1993 trance. There are still loads of DJ's playing "old school" (I hate to say it) tech house.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. |

I was simply pointing out that tech house isn't unique in the fact that it's basically entirely different than it was 10-15 years ago.
And yes, I'm aware that there are DJs who pride themselves on older music. That said, I think you could argue that you could play a tech house record from the 90s in the context of a set today much easier than you could get away with playing a trance record from the 90s today. |
