Well said Josh, and apologies if it seems many have a negative view on how things are in Milwaukee right now. I realize that doing your job in this city is anything but easy, and really do appreciate the effort you make.
The one thing I guess I might add (at the risk of sounding like a whore) is that even though it's nice to have the bigger acts around every once in a while, I think a HUGE part of the problem is getting a more diverse line of local talent out and about. Just my $0.02, but I honestly think it'd help foster some sort of idea that there is a brewing underground scene in Milwaukee.
Beyond that - keep up the good work, and hopefully we'll see you out at Kaskade tonight! :) |
I will go tonight...
Touching on your subject about the locals we have an incredible talented crop of locals here in the city. The problem i see is that were all somewhat divided. What i mean by that and maybe it has to do with how small Milwaukee really is but how often have you seen local heads cross over and support each others gigs/acts? Its mind boggling to me that the deep heads stick with the other deep house heads, the trance stick with theirs, The dnb group is yet another, etc. I have witness this first hand becasue i actually make an effort to come out and check everyone out and its very rarely that i do see a great deal of crossover? I truly believe we have an incredible amount of diversity its just a matter of people coming out and supporting each other. |

just saw this post. i agree josh, we don't have enough support to warrant bringing in the "big names" and our locals aren't diverse enough. actually a lot of us wisco ta's were thinking of something.. perhaps RJT can elaborate a bit. i think we can all agree that something needs to happen, and we're all willing to help out as much as we can to make sure the milwaukee scene doesn't go down the ter. good seeing you the last two nights also :D |

here's an article from this week's Shepherd talking about Mantra closing, and also what's to come...
| quote: | Kamasutra, Mantra Lounge Bid Farewell
by Jenn Danko
January 25, 2007
"From death comes life, from sacrifice comes bliss."
So says the Buddha promoting Kamasutra’s exit gala at Mantra Lounge this Friday. The glossy, cut-out fliers advertising the event have been making their metallic mark across the city, as Milwaukee’s longest-running electronic weekly prepares to turn off its decks for the final time on Friday.
Conceived by former Milwaukee promoter James Amato, the weekly event charmed club audiences for the past three years, helping put the city’s nightlife scene on the national radar. But with the impending closure of the East Side’s Mantra Lounge this weekend—alongside Amato’s relocation to Chicago as SmartBar’s music director—the night played itself out.
“I think the night did a lot of great things to further Milwaukee’s electronic music scene,” Amato said. Its continued success caught the attention of URB magazine, which featured on-location Kamasutra photos in several issues. The magazine also named Amato runner-up for best club promoter in the nation.
During its three-year club tenure, Kamasutra hosted a rotating cast of heavy electronic hitters, including two appearances by Derrick Carter and Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, DJ Heather and DJ Dan, to name a few. The final throw-down adds the U.K.-based Inland Knights to its “been there” list. The production duo behind the esteemed Drop label works over floors with a blend of jazz, funk, dynamic percussion and vocal hooks. After more than eight years of releasing music, they bring their mix of dub, deep, garage and tech house to Milwaukee for the first time. They’re joined by OM Records’ J.Boogie, as well as a final set from Amato.
Kamasutra launched its first Friday event on Jan. 26, 2004, with a set by tech-house stylist Terry Mullan. It will end exactly three years since the date of its inception.
“The open bar nights, Derrick Carter, Sneak—(all of it) was very much what this ‘scene’ was and could be,” said Brian Small, DJ and collective member of Milwaukee’s 12” Players, on remembering Kamastura.
The ending of Kamasutra has since raised questions in the Milwaukee underground electronic community of who will continue to host events. Promoters, including Jonn Hawley of Sound Navigators and Jessica Fenner (Fortune), have begun increasing their bookings of larger electronic music acts, such as Mazi (Jan. 18), and Brian ION and Olivier Desmet, who will both make appearances at Three in the coming months.
Meanwhile, Mantra Lounge co-owner Mike Vitucci remains tight-lipped about his new game plan for the club. He insists the space will continue to function as a dance club but will be completely reformatted. Partnering with several new-but-established faces from Milwaukee’s club scene, the venue is slated to open in spring and feature music and DJs of yet-to-be-named genres seven nights a week.
Mantra Lounge opened its doors in October 2002, taking over the former space of Micro.Bar. It has since established one of the city’s most widely attended ladies nights and has managed to attract club audiences from both the commercial and underground dance music communities.
Stay with Night Noise for a first look at the new space in the coming weeks.
Kamasutra at Mantra Lounge (1905 E. North Ave.) ends on Friday, Jan. 26 with performances by Inland Knights, J.Boogie and James Amato. There is no cover charge for this final event. |
so... at least it's not going to turn into a sports bar! |

7 days a week will be nice too. i hear they're going to call it "decible." not "decibel" for some reason though. perhaps a typo or something. |
