I absolutely will agree that HEIN is a fantastic word in french. Even cooler (somehow?!!) than our English "eh."
When speaking en français, I love to drop "hein" in sentences when I can.

I think that "Great Scott!" is the closest we come to the exclamation "Zut alors!" in English!
It carries the absurdity almost as well. And all the points I mentioned that made "Zut alors!" so wonderful are equally true for Great Scott!
- Is a ridiculous exclamation (CHECK!)
- Is wonderful, fun, and entertaining to say (CHECK!)
- The look your face can take on when you exclaim this can be really comical if done correctly (CHECK!)
- Can be used excellently in a serious or sketchy conversation (CHECK!)
- Works well after absurd statements (CHECK!)
- Can be exclaimed loudly and proudly! (CHECK!)
- You can gasp for good measure (thereby increasing its effect) before saying it (CHECK!)
- Allows one to bulge out one's eye-balls as if one is in incredible shock (CHECK!)
I dunno... It seems (to me) that Great Scott! is on par with and an acceptable and fun (and effective!) solution to producing an English version of this fantastical French exclamation!
