PS3 a "total disaster on so many levels"

Valve Software's chief Gabe Newell has unleashed a stinging attack on PS3, saying Sony should cancel the console and start all over again.

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell reportedly said in an interview with Game Informer.

He continued: "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."

It's a different story with Nintendo, however, Newell revealing he really likes "everything that Nintendo is doing."

"The happy story is the Wii," he said. "I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy."

More bad news for Sony as everything I've predicted is starting to come true. The system is too expensive, it's too difficult for developers to use, and there's no demand for Blu-Ray. PS3 systems are sitting on shelves, unsold, in stores around the world and across North America, and the whole time this is going on, XBox 360 continues to sell and you can't find a DS or a Wii ANYWHERE. So long Sony, it was good while it lasted.

God damn.

Though this guy has a dumbass suggestion. "starting over" is probably the worst thing to do....all Sony has to do if the situation REALLY gets bad is lower the price.

I doubt that'll fix the third party support, lack of good first party titles, rumble-less controllers, etc...

Also, they'd be losing a TON of money. While many might think Sony has a lot to throw around, I'd suggest looking into their recent revenues (10+ year)

interesting topic, i do think sony screwed up big time, and that they will suffer from it, but be knocked out i'm not so sure. but they def. do need to change their strategy a lot.

just be glad you're not in Mexico. $947 for the damn thing when it ships. And yes I have to agree, if Sony reduces prices Immedialtely, its gonna be so long sony. They've dug a huge hole that they can't crawl out of.

Analyst: Sony Missing Sales Goal By 25%? According to a new report by Japanese analyst group Nomura Securities, Sony will only reach 75 percent of its fiscal year sales target for PlayStation 3 consoles after a lower-than-expected U.S. holiday sales season for the next-gen console.

Sony's estimated PlayStation 3 sales up to the end of March 2007 were cut from 6 million to 4.5 million by the group, with what it called "poor sales" in North America through December as the leading factor cited for the drop.

Beyond this year, the group lowered its sales for the next fiscal year (ending March 2008) from 16 million to 10 million, and from 18 million to 11 million the year following (ending March 2009), likely reflecting a lack of confidence by Nomura in the product as a whole, rather than any shorter-term supply issues.

Regarding official sales numbers, as part of its initial press conference at this year's CES Sony confirmed that the company shipped 1 million units of the PlayStation 3 through the end of 2006. However, last week's NPD sales report showed sales of 490,700 units for the period, with 687,300 units sold since its launch in November, a shortfall analysts have recently referred to as 'troubling.'

Combined with Japanese sales of 470,000, according to Enterbrain figures cited by a Marketwatch report, global sales have apparently fallen short of Sony's prior goal of 2 million consoles, though the CES keynote showed Sony continuing to promise 6 million consoles sold worldwide by the end of March 2007. .

That's what I've been saying the entire time :)

PS3 has so many problems I honestly can't see anything saving the console at this point. Unless MGS4 and Final Fantasy 13 are the two greatest video-games to ever be released, the PS3 is going to be trailing the 360 and Wii for this generation. I honestly can't see the PS3 pushing more than 15-20million units during the entirety of it's lifespan. It was available at RETAIL as early as one week before Christmas, it's available EVERYWHERE now. There isn't an EB or Private game shop that doesn't have at least ONE PS3 sitting on a shelf collecting dust that I've been to. For a console that's supposed to be in 'high demand' and 'hard to get', nevermind the fact that it's had production problems and should have 'higher demand' and be 'harder to get', it's RIDICULOUSLY easy to find a PS3 now. But want to buy a DS or Wii? Forget it, those ship in and sell-out as fast as retailers can obtain them.

For a quick recap, just in case you forgot, lets look at everything Sony's screwed up on the PS3:

The launch - SUCKED! Enough said.

600 dollars, enough said - Ok, maybe not enough. The general attitude these days is that for good graphics, you get a 360, for fun and potential, you get a Wii. To stick it to Sony, you get both, and a game for each of them, for just more than the price of the PS3 on it's own.

Blu-Ray - Not in demand, probably won't be in demand anytime soon, Sony are probably about 3-4 years ahead of themselves, and for that, they probably just killed that future 3-4 years from now.

The hulking black box that they want to pass off as a game console. Sony, guys, Microsoft already tried the "Bigger is better" idea, it doesn't work.

The controller - ignoring for a second the loss of it's rumble functionality, the dual-shock was already an outdated and obsolete controller as it is, to continue to use the now flawed design, remove the rumble feature, and also pull a bootleg copycat of Nintendo's motion-sensitivity, and it doesn't even work properly yet... man oh man, what a POS controller. To get an idea of what I'm talking about, go play NHL 2007 on an Xbox, then go play NHL 2007 on a PS2, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The games thus far - They suck, the ones that don't suck are just 'new' versions of games that have been released since 1992. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Resistance is JUST another FPS, a racing game is a racing game, and a sports title is a sports title. And I'm not confident that any games coming out are going to be all that great either, I'm 99% confident that MGS4 will feel just like MGS3 with new levels, I'm 99% confident that Final Fantasy 13 will feel like every other RPG in the world with a different story, I'm 99% confident that Grand Turismo 5 is going to feel like GT4, but with 'tilt-sensitive' steering instead of a joystick. Maybe I'm just biased because I'm one of the gamers that played a Wii, and will never be happy with a 2-handed, button and joystick input ever again, but stop upgrading the graphics and start making some GOOD, FUN, GAMES (This goes out to XBox 360 too, it's sad that the only reason I want a 360 is to play geometry wars)

3rd party support is skeptical - This is the real tell-tale sign of how a system will fare. PS3's 'revolutionary' Cell processor is so far creating more headaches for developers than it is improving gaming. This is a bad, BAD sign, as development difficulties are what plagued the N64 back in the day, caused developers to look for another console to make games on, and opened the door for Sony to become market-leader in the first place. Now karma is rearing it's ugly head, and Sony's getting a taste of Nintendo's medicine.

Almost 0 first-party titles - So we have Sony starting to see what Nintendo had to put up with with the N64, on top of that, Sony struggles with "Segatitus", aka. No first-party titles. While Sega at least had Sonic to fall back on, Sony has done nothing but attempt their own first-party software that has all but dissapeared from the gaming landscape. When Nintendo's 3rd party developers jump ship, it's ok, because they can pull in a profit with Pokemon, Mario, Metroid, Star Fox, Zelda, Mario Kart, F-Zero, more recently games like Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, etc. If Sony's 3rd party developers bail, they have nothing to fall back on but OTHER 3rd party developers.

Poor online support - Ok, so it's free, great, it's FREE! To that I say "You get what you pay for." At least when Nintendo makes a free online service that's a little difficult to deal with at first, I can still get excited because I know I'm about to start playing Smash Bros online... Sony has never had great multiplayer games, I don't see that miraculously changing any time soon. XBox, on the other hand, has a WONDERFUL online format (go figure, the OS factory was able to make a working OS for console online gaming) already has proven multiplayer franchises that keep people happy, namely any XBox sports title, and Halo. Lets face it, the controller for Playstation just makes action-games uncomfortable to play, the XBox controller fits like a glove, Sony can't ride a wave of bad RPGs forever... the gaming landscape has changed, and Sony was too busy sniffing their own s to notice.

So here's where it gets REALLY messy for Sony... The only thing that will save their PS3 right now is a price-drop, or the best game ever made... And I'm not talking about "OMG, Resistance: Fall of Man is the bestest gamzor ever made!", I'm talking a paradigm shift like Pac-Man, Tetris, Mario, Mario 64, Zelda, you get the idea? Wow it's hard to talk about REAL innovation without looking like a Nintendo floozy. Unfortunately, Sony can't afford a price-drop, they're already losing money on every PS3 sold as it is. So they're stuck with having to create the honest-to-God BEST game ever created in the history of videogames. Guess what? They aren't going to do it, Sony doesn't have the talent within their own company, and they don't have the patience to let a 3rd party make it. As a gaming contender, Sony's days are numbered.
