In spite of all nonsense this thread is actually kinda interesting, i read it all through like nothing.
I voted for The Antikythera Mechanism because it's the only track in the final poll that i like, and i would have chosen it out of a far bigger selection of tracks, because i genuinely like it. The other tracks in the poll are imo far beyond or in the vicinity of the waste-of-time mark.
The Antikythera Mechanism is also the only track in poll which by todays standards can be considered intelligent. thoughtlessjex made a good post about the technical characteristics of the track. Those are facts, it doesn't make it better, nothing does, because the appeal is subjective, but i appreciate those aspects.
And about the "it's a goddamn orchestra" comments... How many mainstream trance artists do you think can write music for and direct an orchestra? I don't say you have to like it or that it is better than anything else, but please don't try to ridicule it, you only accomplish ridiculing yourself. |
the point is that yes i does take skill but its nothing that unique, its been done before. now though because bt released it on an album you act like u've never heard something like it before... |

| And really, who cares whether "similar" things have been done? It's a good track, and certainly displays ten times the creativity, originality, and musical talent of anything else on the list. |

In conclusion:
The 2006 TranceAddict TOTY may indeed be quite a controversial subject, but we at least know who gets awarded the 2006 Tranceaddict Moron of the Year award.

I do? As far as i can recall i haven't written anything about the actual orchestration. BT's is clearly not a very advanced one, but it's good. And i listen to orchestral music almost every day since many years, so it would be unlikely that i react the way you stated. |

The question is not why The Anhtkythera Mechanism has earned so many votes in the final polls. That's pretty obvious by now, and quite understandable as well as far as I'm concerned. What puzzles me, though, is why so many people chose The Anhtkythera Mechanism in the initial selection? Every single person was completely free to select 10 tracks he or she considered to be the best of 2006. I understand perfectly that there's a great amount of voters that chose 10 non-trance tracks. I did so as well. But some of the people who voted for The Anhtkythera Mechanism in the final polls already stated here that they actually don't consider it to be the best track of the album. And personally, I prefer other tracks on it over The Anhtkythera Mechanism as well. So I wonder why it's exactly this track that got so many votes in the initial selection? It seems a bit odd to me that so many people put this track in their top lists, seeing there were so many other non-trance tracks to choose from, or even other BT tracks to start with. Why didn't Good Morning Kaia make it for instance?
This post isn't at all meant to judge or to criticize anyone's choice, far from it. I'm just really curious to figure out if The Anhtkythera Mechanism's succes in the initial selection was after all just a - freaky - coincide or a deliberate choice made by many voters that put aside personal preferences for a greater good? :) |

| Check back to the TBU discussions long before this poll kicked off. The Antikythera Mechanism is simply the most popular track from the album, and has been since the release. My theory on the matter was that the track was the standout in a very singular album because it did the most stuff: it had the guitar section, the orchestra and some of the most notable glitching. I wouldn't pick out individual tracks from TBU, but if you wanted to sell the album on one track, it would probably be The Antikythera Mechanism. |

| That sort of answers my question :) |

That's just my take on it. The cynical answer, that has also gone around, is that it's the most superficial and approachable part of the album due to having a -off orchestral section. Judging from the posts of certain idiotic members round here, that answer may be true for some people. However, I reckon that TBU is an album which takes a bit of musical listening experience to enjoy, and so fans of it are probably mature enough listeners to appreciate the whole album and the track for what it offers, rather than being predominantly a bunch of idiots who like it because it's BT and has a bit in that reminds them of a film score. And that's a bloody long sentence.
Oh, and I'm opening a big can of worms by suggesting there's a skill to listening to albums, but I'll go with that anyway. It takes time and experience to be able to digest 70 minutes or so of holistic music, especially when the entry point into music for most people is the three minute pop song. If you grew up listening to classical you're going to be able to judge large amounts of related music much better than someone who's just started doing it. |

The idea that taste and appreciation for art are skills to be developed rather than something you're just born with is pretty offensive to a lot of people.
Those people are often the same ones who sneer at orchestras and accuse other people of being "snobs." :o |
