No offence to those who are religious, but the bibles teachings are a load of bull honkey!

90% of it contradicts itself. The bible promotes slavery, beating wives and treating them like posessions. It teaches on how you should physically punish your children, your slaves, and your wives. ETC ETC ETC.

I will admit, there are a lot of good teachings in the bible, but there are also a lot of things that don't make sense.

Makes perfect sense if you take it for what it is - A fairly arbitrary compilation of writings spanning various cultures and localities over several thousand years. Each part makes sense in its own historical context. The evangelical myth that the entire bible is the unadulterated and pure word of God is something only a moron would believe.

That is one of the most eloquent pieces of text I have read in quite a while. Cheers Astro.

More to the point, who gives a ?

I can't understand people who believe in god. What makes your god any better or more faith-worthy than any other? It's obvious that we're just sucumbing to the animalistic impulse to feel you're the centre of the universe and the need to explain things you're too stupid to find a reason for...

Maybe a bit too far there :p

People believe it because they believe it. It may not sound right to you or me, but that doesn't change a thing. Nor will a heap of argumentative discourse over the topic change a thing. To me, it sounds a bit weird. But to someone who believes in God, scripture, and the whole nine yards...

You (and I) look like the biggest retards in the world. In fact, echosystm, you're going to burn in hell. Right beside me (more 'under' me, actually).

But, none the less, I have respect for the fact that religious people have different beliefs than me. Because I'm pretty damn sure I have beleifs quite different than a bunch of folk out there.

<3 for diversity. It would all be dull without it :)

you missed out the most important part:

Song of Solomon 7

1 How beautiful your sandaled feet,
O prince's daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
the work of a craftsman's hands.

2 Your navel is a rounded goblet
that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
encircled by lilies.

3 Your breasts are like two fawns,
twins of a gazelle.

4 Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
looking toward Damascus.

5 Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
Your hair is like royal tapestry;
the king is held captive by its tresses.

6 How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
O love, with your delights!

7 Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.

8 I said, "I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit."
May your breasts be like the clusters of the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,

9 and your mouth like the best wine.

Beloved
May the wine go straight to my lover,
flowing gently over lips and teeth. [a]

10 I belong to my lover,
and his desire is for me.

11 Come, my lover, let us go to the countryside,
let us spend the night in the villages. [b]

12 Let us go early to the vineyards
to see if the vines have budded,
if their blossoms have opened,
and if the pomegranates are in bloom—
there I will give you my love.

13 The mandrakes send out their fragrance,
and at our door is every delicacy,
both new and old,
that I have stored up for you, my lover.

Mainly because you guys are using arguments that are the broadest "I havent read the bible, but I heard it contradicts itself lol" kind of arguments Im just going to leave it at this:

People WAY smarter than you and way more interested have been debating the Bible for like....2000 years and yet Biblical scholars today do not find any of the issues you guys are raising significant or inexplicable in any way.

If you are truly interested, research. If your conclusions of "there are inherent contradictions so blatant in the Bible, that it could not possibly be true as it is supposedly the Word of God..."etc..

Please, show your research or at least explain it in a way that makes sense. And please...dont go google "Bible contradictions atheist" and post what someone else wrote as a retroactive study into finding an argument that supports your knee-jerk belief.

Religion causes war
Bible contradicts
There was slavery
There was sex
God killed people
why do bad things happen
why arent there any more miracles
Can God create hotsauce so hot he couldnt stand to eat it

its all the same crap that the uninitiated always spew. Its ignorant, its puerile, and its insulting.

Knowing that you had this seemingly impassable obstacle in a path to what was potentially a greater understanding of life, God, and salvation and you didn't spend ANY time finding an answer?

scary. Very scary.

You know, when I read the thread title, I thought this was going to be another controversial Mel Gibson movie discussion. :wtf:

In archaeological terms, the more we dig, the less the bible geographically contradicts itself.

On another not, the bible does not promote those things in anyway, I don't know where you got that idea from.
