Music for Highschool
View this Thread in Original format
Factor VIII
On Friday I'm going to dj for our school during lunch. I'm really looking forward to this. The only problem is the music. How do I slowly introduce high school kids to house music when they don't know the difference between house and trance :(

My current tracklist is

Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso - 82-83
JL Henney - Me And My Moog (Cass & Tom Mangan Mix)
Eric Prydz - Proper Education (club mix)
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Angello & Ingrosso Vocal)
Pryda - Remember
eric smax and thomas gold - our roots
The drill - The drill
Stardust - music sounds better with you < intro is hard to mix
Carl cox - latin theme < thinking of taking this out.
Whos Who - Not So Dirty

The set needs to be approximately 45 minutes

The more and more I practice this set. The more I realize that some of the songs are just not meant to go together. such as
the drill - the drill > stardust - music sounds better with you
Sounds like

My question is. Can anybody provide me with the name of some songs that are more pop-house? Maybe some popular remixes, songs that go well with people that have never heard house music? I'm thinking about throwing Faithless - music matters (axwell remix) and
flg - hands up 4 Detroit in there :toothless

Pretty much I'm just looking for some advice because this will also be my first gig.

As much as I hate to say you probably should throw that in since they're all unfamiliar with edm and it will pwn them all.

is this like a lunch dance party? i mean aren't people going to be eating? It would be hard for me to eat my sandwhich when the drill is playing.

Personally I would save that tracklist for a dance party, I don't understand how that works with a high school cafeteria, but then again, I've never met you or been to your high school. ;) just seems like the energy might be under-appreciated in this venue

I used to have music workshops held at high schools and in all honesty, it's best to stay on the more pop-oriented stuff. You could even throw in some really cheesy crap like what they hear on Dance Dance Revolution (what high schooler hasn't played it at least once). The key is to not violate them so that they skirmish away from it. There are plenty of pop remixes out there, these are solid dance tracks to "introduce" them into EDM. Keep in mind that if they're interested, they'll soon discover that there is more to EDM than the pop regenerated songs.

As for your mixing, I'm certain that they won't be a bit concerned by it. Just do your best and remember it's more about exposing them to EDM than how good you are on the decks.

lots of rmxs mate. i did something similar about a year back at our high school (but it was after school) and ppl seemed to enjoy lots of rmxs of famous tracks and stuff from the swedish house mafia and ppl like mylo.

btw your gonna get lots of requests for rap songs
stan229
yea.. on that energy level.. try to keep the mix more progressive than "clubby"

i dont really know much house music just a general suggestion

Thats so ture.

If i had to do something like this now i would play stuff like this:

1. Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing (Paper Faces Rmx)
2. Prydz Vs. Floyd - Proper Education
3. Axwell Ft. Steve Edwards - Watch The SunRise (Vocal Dub)
4. Olav Basoski - Waterman
5. Eurythimics - Sweet Dreams (Angello Rmx)

just a few tracks and not in anay order but just to give you an idea.

Hope i have helped you out :D

Eric Prydz - Call On Me
They will enjoy it.

We don't have a cafeteria at our school. Kids just eat outside around the buildings and in a central area called the quad. I was thinking the same thing about eating and dancing too, but then I realized that kids at our school don't eat during lunch, lunch is just a social hour.

Thanks everyone for the good advice.
I'm going to rework my track list tonight, play it a few times and see how it sounds from there.
I'll be back.
