What makes a good movie

I am getting fairly sick of reading reviews online from random jackoffs or in respectable cinema magazines who can't get the facts straight!
So TAs what according to you makes a good movie?
I realize this is all very subjective and the responses will vary greatly from one person to the next but just tell me your honest opinion.
In the following factors what would consider is the most important for you to view a movie as being good :
Nice filming/editing ( the visual aspect )
the characters ( actors ( famous or not ) and their portrayal of the character )
Entertainment value (action, unexpected outcomes, things that keep you at the edge of your seat wondering what is coming up next )
etc etc
There can obviously be no right or wrong analyses of what makes a good movie but in my opinion all three things I mentionned are what is important.
So many people tend to hate certain movies saying they were crap simply because they disliked the story simply due to the subject matter displayed on screen...
While I understand these people may not have found the movie entertaining to them it could still be a brilliant movie.
People need to stop confusing their dislikes for a story and the quality of a movie.

| I would say it has to be all three factors that would make a good movie. Like the movies that have great actors and asthetics but such a storyline that it pretty much makes the whole movie crap. I.E. "Smokin' Aces", great cast pretty good acting, visually stunning...but the story was so out of whack that the movie was ruined. |

Good story line. I think it's the " behind the camera" team that makes the movie what it is, not necessarily the actors. |

to me a good movie has to cover all facets. however i think the dialogue and the plot are the most important things, if they are great it makes the directors and the actors' job alot easier and it allows them to really pull the rest of the movie and make it great. because really if the dialogue is cheesy (like soap cheesy) no amount of great acting can make it sound feasible and same with the storyline.
so to me the script has to be good first, then the acting and the characters in the movie have to be great and likeable and last i think the action sequences and directing have to brilliant and entertaining.
the best movies imo have all of these qualities while others may only have some of them and others may have none of them. but it all starts with the script, just look at the movie "alexander" and you will see that no amount of great action sequences or acting performances could make that 3 hour piece of seem decent. braveheart is an example of a movie that has all the qualities of what makes a great movie and its quite clear why its a classic. |

1. Story above all and the execution of the progression of story.
2. a multitude of OMG cinematography techniques that either stylize or emphasize the mood of the film throughout the film. Wether it's the position and angles of cameras (Silent Hill), saturation/"bloom" of images (Traffic, The Fountain, 300), or putting the audience into the film with first person accounts (Saving Private Ryan opening scene)
2. Music. Peter Jackson/James Cameron and who ever they choose to score their films ftw.
4. I give two s about acting. Bad acting is annoying, but i don't score it hella heavy compared to the other parts. Hell, i think every foreign film has bad acting, considering i don't know how they are saying what they are saying. it's all about the dialogue :)))))))):)))))):)::):):) |

i agree with points 1 2 and 3. but seriously acting matters a hell of alot, when everything else is perfect it can turn a great film into a masterpiece. when everything else is dodgy it can turn it into a decent film. alot of the time the difference between a good movie and a ty one is the acting.
i dont see how a classic like braveheart or saving private ryan (which u mentioned) could have been half as good with ty performances, your not going to like any of the characters if its a ty performace and your not going to care about the story they are involved in if they are ty characters that u dont care about because of the acting. its why alot of soaps are so to watch even if they do have good storylines.... |
