what upsets me is that people think this going to happen...like...tomorrow.
i still think we need to give research another 100 years. by then, it'll be too late and we'll all be dead. but i just think we can get a better understanding of global weather if the record books go not just from ~1880-2007....but from ~1880-2080. |
Well, its actually happening today. Its getting warmer. Its due to an increase in GHG. I fear this year's hurricane season, because as I understand theres a La Nina brewing, which means even more destruction. Its sad and scary. |

I don't think its going to happen tomorrow but once thing progress past a certain point it will be very difficult to reverse. The longer you wait the harder its going be to change. |

Im agreeing with you. Its not an isolated event. Just like the past 5 years have been the warmest on record, too. |
just out of curiosity, were there any other groups of 3-5 yrs that were warmer than the rest of the decade?
i.e., say for example, 1952-1956 was warmer than the rest of the 50s. has that ever happened before? [maybe not that decade, but another group of 10 years?] |

we do what australia does and everything will be fine before anything gets out of hand.
i'm not saying that doing eviormentaly friendly things is wrong.
i'm just sick of the whole doomsday everyone believs. |

maybe not,
but in the past 100 years, most of the earths warming took place BEFORE 1940. before the boom of industry and 'co2 making factories'. |

I you can look it up in NOAA records (which are free to access) but my quick answer is yes - warming has been happening for a while, it only makes sense that we're going to have more and more years that are warmer than "all the rest." |

i realize that seasonal averages now are warmer than say 60 years ago.
last i heard we were still in el nino, which helped reduce the # this year.
there's still LOTS of research that needs to be done before any links can be made to climate change and the # of hurricanes that happend.
keep in mind, the only reason...the ONLY reason why 2005 was such a horrible year was because of the breaks in the levies. if those levies had not broke, the damage, destruction, and costs would have been significantly lower.
Anyone remember Andrew? |

it wasn't just katrina, that year i believe there were so many hurricanes they ran through the entire alphabet and had to use alphas. that might have been the first time that happened. |

perhaps we are the tip of the iceberg as far as this topic is concerned. yes, 2004-2005 there were more hurricanes than previous years. but there were years that had numerous hurricanes and strong ones too before 2004. anyone can go to wunderground.com and see.
if this trend continues for the next 10 years. then yes, i will agree.
but over 100 years....to say that 2-4 years in a row were greater than all other years.... |

i'm talking dollar signs.
if katrina didn't happen, the overal cost of the 2005 hurricane season would have been EXTREMELY less.
but yes you are correct in saying it was the first time that greek letters were used. keep in mind, however, that everything after Wilma never touched land. in fact, i think a good number of storms between Rita and Wlima didn't affect land either.
lots of storms doesn't mean the overall cost of damage/destruction will be high. |
