likewise to the customer to realize that every retail store isn't a BMW lot and we can refuse to wipe ass, swallow loads, or fall off ladders to grab "that thing with the red thing on it." |

My company is trying to get us to start advertising products verbally, but I absolutely refuse. If you're interested, you'll ask. I know that when I go shopping I know what it is I'm there for, so all I want to do is grab it and get the out. That's how I treat whoever comes up to me. I'll say hi and ask if I can help you find anything, sure, but I'm not going to tell you about this week's special(s) unless you ask. |

Yes a huge +1 here. If I say no thanks, it means I'm not interested..STFU! I understand you want to make commission, and I understand that you have it on sale but it's not relevant to my interests. If I wanted it I'd buy it.
And no Vandit, I'm only there to get great service and no attitude when I walk in there doing the same, being nice with no nasty attitude. I can't stand people who work in retail for the simple fact that they don't know how to treat NICE and PAYING customers. And this doesn't apply to ALL employees but it applies to the majority. If you hate your job so much, and you must because it makes you so angry, get another job. |

| It still comes down to and ass. A waitress can be slow as long as she looks good.It makes me drink more. I personally think department stores should study the Hooters marketing technique, solely because what man wouldn't want to purchase a toaster from a sales girl that could hold a pitcher between them;) |

Being a sales coach can be a job for life if you're ever hard up for cash or just want full time employment = forever.
Course, you do have to have certain qualities yourself, either the patience of a saint or ability to bludgeon a tribe of idiots into shape with nothing more than your wits... |

i hear ya idoru. I can't believe how long i stayed at my last job without selling bull warranties and services. Most of them are usually hella overpriced (50% computer warranty is gay!). i'd rather not be responsible when they come back 4-5 months down the line to know they aren't going to get serviced.
but sometimes it's funny when my co-workers pull bull.
*true story*
some marine guy came in like a year ago and bought a warranty on a laptop and the salesperson said "really! anything can happen to it and we'll replace it! you could be in iraq and have it run over by a tank and we'll replace it totally!"
and then one day i was working Customer Service reading wikipedia and this marine guy comes up and says he needs a replacement on his laptop. and i see a bullet in the laptop. "ummmm, ok"
i felt pretty bad for him after he told me his story of the co-worker a year ago.

I'm not a natural @ the retail job. I start out every interaction with my cheeriest attitude, ready to tell customers about hacking and filesharing and "the truth" about the peice of they are about to buy, and recommend either the "Vandit Pick" or the "Vandit Value Pick"
See, i try my best.
BUT:
About 90% of customers want me to suck their dick, lick their , or have me jump through a loop INTO their AND THEN clean it while sucking their dick.
Aisle 10 is between aisle 9 and 11.
The bathroom is in the back under the HUGE BLACK bathroom sign.
Yes, 10% of $10 is $1
No, i can't give you a ing discount because there are 10 boxes out there and the box you picked up has semen on the box.
No, i can't walk you to your aisle. I have to ing ring up people and i'm up here by my ing self at the registers and there's people in line who aren't gay.
yes, you forgot your ing credit card, so yes, you have to wait.
No, i won't change security settings so you can look @ myspace.com so you can find a link to show me a picture of a peice of router that we might have in stock.
No, i don't want to look for a copy of World of Warcraft for you.
I'm not neccessarily talking to you specifically frenchie, who knows what kind of customer you would be. just customers that either wear diapers, lack common sense, or refused to apply basic middle school mathematics to their life, but god damnit they know how to run tetris on their motorola razr. believe me, this accounts for about 90% of customers.
this is a good customer:
Customer: where is THIS?
me: aisle 10.
Customer: ??????? where's that?
me: go up the middle. you'll see THAT and THAT and then you'll find your THIS right there.
customer: k thnx
::5 minutes pass::
customer: :( i can't find it.
me: alrite man, lemme call someone for you. "NAME to customer service"
and he gets serviced. he comes up to register with THIS
me: sup man.
customer: hi
::ring::
::done::
me: later
now, bad customer:
Customer: where is THIS?
me: aisle 10
customer: ????? Where's that?
me: go up the middle. you'll see THAT and.......
customer: can you take them there?
me: eh, i'm kinda busy. i'm working the line here man.
customer: it's ok. i'll wait here.
/turns dick mode on/
me: terrific!
::more customers in line:: ::customers ringing. coming leaving coming leaving::
customer: how long is this going to take?
me: as long as it takes man. you know, we have salespersons on the floor who can help you.
customer: / sigh i'm so disappointed rollseyes/ how do i know they work here?
me: we actually don't wear uniforms or name tags. so it's pretty much a guessing game.
/customer leaves/
ugh, this is long.
but i quit my job while helping a customer 2 weeks ago. well actually, i went on my co-workers register, helped other customers in front of her, clocked out, and left her.
now how are people in san diego supposed to realize about the digital glorious open source/GNU :( |

I guess being a bartender isn't really retail...
Anyway, until you have worked at a bar that serves 99% males, it's hard to relate to how I feel sometimes.
I had a man take my new employee aside on Friday night and offer her money for sex.
The guys are constantly making rude comments to me, like "I love the way you fit into those pants... I wonder how you look out of them", and like that.
It's hard to stay friendly when you're flat out being sexually harassed. |

| lücid |
| uhh.. isn't that kind of the point of being a female bartender? why would you even choose to do a job like that if you can't tolerate drunk horny men? |
|
|
| Frenchie |
| Comes with the job. All female bartenders get "harassed". You take sexy bartenders + horny drunk men...it's gonna happen eventually. |

I honestly try to be nice to every customer but I'm human and can't help but not be in the greatest mood after having to deal with actual customers. You deal with just a couple of them in a day and it's hard to stay in a good mood and unfortunately you might not be as nice as you should be to other customers. I've come to expect people not to be the nicest when I walk in as a customer in other stores, I don't expect them to be a complete to me but then again I don't expect them to be all cheery and ready to do anything at my request (too many customers think they're God and because you're a little retail worker you have to bow to their every command). The majority of people are fine, but you'd be surprised how much of an effect just a couple of disrespectful customers can have on your mood.
You see far too many cases of people mistreating each other in retail...it's usually minor of course but theres definitely too many instances of it. As soon as I'm done with school I'm out of retail for good. |
