Anyone else really sick of these new "Horror" films being made?
I mean I just watched that new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I don't get how it is horror, it's just plain, chunky and disgusting gore. Blood everywhere, guts. I mean I'm fine with some of that but when it really loses the "scary" factor it once had then I think Hollywood has got some thinking to do.
They should rename it from Horror to Gorror :(
Anyone else feel the same way? |

from cinema that tried to instigate a thought process to the viewers in the past to what we have today thanks to a blast against intellectualism in the hippy era .... you have no other alternatives than to stray away from the mass of what constitutes popular culture if you are seeking for something better

Yeah, way way too many horror films go straight for the "splatter" side of things. It just makes them idiotic. Then again, horror movies in general are pretty awful.
But I did like Odishon. |

It's like the film hostel...it isn't scary at all, just plain disgusting and over the top with the gore.
It's obviously just the director lacking in any skills to scare the viewer, so they just resort to packing in as much gore as possible. Which isn't really scary at all. |

i don't like many horror films these days :(
The best I've seen in the past couple of years has been Ringu, The Ring, The Descent and Silent Hill.
Ringu seemed original, probably because I didn't expect the whole "omg, TV demons, lol, japanese are pussies" thing to get to me. The Ring was an excellent remake (original ing sucked dick). I liked The Descent because of it's Dehumanization theme, also the open ending in the UK version (OMG, US version has a SCARY ENDING OMG). Silent Hill wasn't that good (the revelation scene was one of the worst scenes i have ever seen in my life), but it has some nice cinematography.
Hills Have Eyes was pretty gay. I like violence as much as the next guy, but that whole "dad gets crucified and burned alive, while the mother is shot in the chest, while the girl is being raped, while the mutant has a gun to the baby's head", i was like, ummmm, ok, trying to hard to shock?)
Hostel was beyond gay. eli roth and his "omg, i'm a horror prodigy" mentality.
I want to see The Host, a huge huge huge film from Korea which is currently being distributed in America (and hollywood plans to do a remake $$$$$$$$$). But there are no local theaters playing it :(
I hear it's probably the best "horror" film of our era. The trailer makes it seem like a Sci-Fi, and reviews make it seem like every genre in the book (horror, comedy, drama, mystery, sci-fi, LOLORLFORL) |

There have only been two or three movies that have genuinely terrified me.
The Shining which was just incredible, being able to keep me scared for up to a couple of minutes at a time. Ooooooft. Amazing.
Modern horror movies seem to just want to pile on the gore, which is totally boring. |

it's also about desensitivity. A lot of the older movies were freaky back then but the more people know & explore, the less of a taboo it becomes. Many of the older ones I find funny instead of scary, but if I'd have seen it at the time, i'd probably have shat myself. |
