sorry, youre wrong. by your definition there is no such thing as a democracy, which means i can use it to mean representative government, which it can and does. the word comes from the greek, where the REPRESENTATIVES of the landowning class would get their turn in the parliament. tsk tsk, kids of today with their dodgy understandings. |
wow how ignorant
google definition
The term democracy indicates a form of government where all the state's decisions are exercised directly or indirectly by a majority of its citizenry through a fair elective process. When these factors are met a government can be classified as such. This can apply to a multitude of government systems as these concepts transcend and often occur concomitantly with other types.
here is the definition from a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY aka DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC.
a government in which the adult citizens of the country vote to elect the country's leaders. These elected leaders make the governmental decisions
also you must consider that back in those days LAND OWNERS were the only people whou COULD vote or have any say in things. so when they say land owners they are referring to the only people who were legally at the time considered citizens |

note your "directly or indirectly" and "fair elective process" and "multitude of government systems". meaning that a representative democracy can be called a democracy *shock horror* which is what i said.

can you please illustrate the difference? coz im not seeing any. both of your so-called definitions require representation. and youre right about the landowners in ancient greece, however that wasnt relevant. the term demokratia (from memory, could be wrong) was a representation of those that were allowed to engage in the political process. the fact women and non land-owners couldnt engage is besides the point.
but i would like you to point out the difference between the definitions for me. maybe im being a little slow ;) |

fair elective process doesnt mean nor does it imply representatives. it means that its not a fraud.
you seem to also be missing that it means direct. i see that that horrible definition has indirect in there when it shouldnt. but then again bling bling is in the dictionary. |

| A "democracy" is any state in which the leaders are accountable to their constituents through elections or referenda of some kind. It can be either representative or direct. In the case of a direct democracy each person would be "accountable" to everybody else. |

It's obvious you're completely incapable of reading comprehension and holding an intelligent conversation, as you both completely missed the point of my quotation and decided to resort to childish insults to try and defend yourself.
I can't say I'm surprised, though. |

well unfortunately the general populace in the us is taught that "democracy" refers to direct democracy. i should have really said that from the beginning. |
