i think, i mean it's ed up if you kill yourself...but why the HELL would you ever bring innocent people with you? ...it's just another level of selfish.

to quote h.g. wells

"history is a race between education and catastrophe"

i think this sums it up, we see the same thing happening over and over again, are things going to change or will history keep repeating itself...

It isn't the guns, or the music or the TV.

Those reasons are cop outs, there were loads of guns in the US 50 years ago and these things WERE happening but far less frequently (IE: Clock Tower sniper guy in the 60s, I think).

Same thing with the Dawson shooting, the guy's parents were so absent minded and/or stubborn to the notion that their son might be disturbed that they more or less allowed him (however indirectly) to get to the point of walking into a school and shooting people.

I have thought more about this tragedy the last couple of days than I would have liked to. Blaming these problems on society can most definately be considered as a cop out of sorts, but i also believe if society as a whole keeps ignoring te signs the next few generations will be very troublesome. What ever happened to the ideologies of helping your fellow man and reaching out to those in need. I am far from being a religious zealot, but I am seriously beginning to feel like we need to take a step back and bring back a sense of morality and compassion towards your fellow man. These problems weren't as prevelent in the 50's and 60's, because wether we choose to accept it or not people back then were raised better.
We are living in the age of Me Me Me,and if it doesn't stop it can only get worse. Its sad when people can be attacked in the broad daylight in a busy place and have no one help them. I see tendancies like this every day. The parent who puts their needs before their children....Media outlets who cry out that the violence that has taken over on our streets, campuses, and even young peoples mind sets is horrible, yet these same outlets sensationalize the same kind of violence in film, music, and television for the sake of the almighty dollar. Its does not seem to end. We are only creating more disenfranchised and ostrasized young people who feel like the only solution is to lash out. People saw the troubles in this young man, but he never receivedthe help he needed. ( the hospital that released him and never bothered to follow up on him failed him and every person who lost a love one because of him.) Until we find a way to bring back any sense of love, respect, and compassion to our fellow man it is only going to get worse. This could have been avoided...this SHOULD have been avoided. The fear and hate that runs deep within the fabric of our generation's mindset has made it so no one wants to take a chance and help his neighbour if he is in need. Because of this these poor parents are burying children that had no reason to die. Things need to change...values and respect need to be brought back.

It shouldn't bother me as much as it has, but when i see the bull being spewed on every channel non stop i am really sickened. The writting has been on the wall for a long time, and we choose to ignore it because its the easy thig to do. We are the only people that can stop this senseless garbage, but until we al realize that the state of our children is more important than our social status we are a failure as a whole. No one thinks anymore it seems...thinking that the problems we will have created for our future children and grand children do not matter because we will not be around to witness the is the ultimate in selfishness. There is more to this life than wealth and the corporate agenda. We seriously need to invest in our future generations instead of wars abroad. A change is needed, but are people's heads and agendas stuck so far up their ass that when the coverage stops it will cease to be important? Sadly i think this is the case. Our legacy that we leave behind should be a prosperous happy place for our children, not a ing wasteland whre more and more people feel like they have no place in it. This seriously disgusts me...

ANF is correct in that society isn't as cohesive as before (maybe byproduct of technology, greed, and the breakdown of the church?). However, I really have a difficult time sympathizing for this individual, regardless of the apparent "lack of reaching out to those in need." This guy was suffering from an apparent mental illness, but the meticulousness of his actions suggest he was pretty much aware of what he was doing.

The massacre exposes the weakening of a lot of institutions. Somehow, his family has to be held accountable, somehow that individual has to be held accountable too (too late now, I guess). We also live in an era where individuals no longer take responsibility for his/her actions and blame everyone else. Lawyers are capitalizing on this big time. Sue the cigarette companies for my lung cancer.

Now do we live in a more violent society today than before? That is highly debatable, actually. It's also relative too, as many of these debates about the degredation of society have been ongoing for centuries, actually. Unfortunately, what we have here is a copycat massacre, which will undoubtedly continue to spur on more similar types of massacres.

However, I do believe it will be trickier to detect those types of psychotic loners in this age of detachment (re breakdown of church, family, influences of technology, etc).

I don't think he should be absolved, as he did commit these actions.
What pisses me off is that he was in a situation were everyone was aware of his mental state and yet his situation was allowed to degenerate. Its like knowing someone is on their way to murder their neighbour, yet not bothering to warn them simply because it would be going out of your way to do so. Life should not be as complicated and unforgiving as we make it out to be. If we don't start going out of our way and keep ignoring things, who else will we have to blame but ourselves. He commited these attrocities, but he isn't here to see the reprecussions or effects is he? This is why we should see these things and TRY to change how things are. If we don't who will...Society is not accountable techncally, but it is the only thing that as any power to make a difference.
