and then for those that take a language in uni why would you take it to just promptly forget it? id take one that can be beneficial to myself. even if its not beneficial to my work it may be beneficial to something i enjoy. |
In my case, I was required to take a language for 4 years in HS and 2 semesters of it in college.
If I brushed up on Latin and Spanish, I'm sure I can pick up on it again in no time |

myra: lol sounds like me...but at the same time i loved it and my teacher immersed us into it very well so when i take it again at the JC it will come back to me quick. im hoping to go to school in berlin either next year or the following year! 3yrs there and i have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. cant wait! |
depends on the situation and the person im with...you can live in Montreal without knowing French, its just way more practical if you do.I speak it every day and often even speak Frenglish...which can be common around here. Its when you mix both languages in the same sentence.
ex. I'm going to the store, as-tu besoin de quelque chose?
or
Bend over so i can manger ton trou for easier access avec my pousse crotte.
best thing about knowing French (and functional Italian) is that when i go to the us women ing eat it up. Quebec French doesn't have the same inflections, vocabulary and accents...but you can bet your bottom dollar I can switch to Parisian or Marseillais in a ing heart beat given a wif of broutte broutte minou.
English is still my primary language. |

Yeah, and that's a problem, actually. In spite of the similarity, the languages underwent very different mergers and splits both in their grammar and phonology. As a matter of fact, Brazilian Portuguese exhibits some innovations that don't seem to be common in the Iberian peninsula any more, and that drastically changed the way we use pronouns in our daily lives here (most Brazilians say "I saw she" instead of "I saw her", for example, and it occasionally happened in Portugal - but I've never ever seen this in Spanish).
Not to mention the "false friends" that are common across different languages. For example, "vaso" in Portuguese means "vase", but it means "glass/cup" as in "a glass of water" in Spanish. Also, a funny thing to note here is that even the pronunciation of this word only has in common the sound "a" in both languages - the "v", the "s" and the "o" are pronounced completely different :p
Conclusion: I thought English was a lot easier to learn :D |

i enjoyed learning another language, but the French teacher at our high school was a boring old lady. i actually passed my last year of French even though i cut that class 41 times that school year (i had it first period every day)... so i don't remember enough to speak it fluently or have a conversation, but if i'm reading a book that has a phrase or title or something in French, i can usually figure it out. |

i took spanish in middle school and high school...it's kind of required if you live in south florida lol. well it's not, but it should be since almost everyone speaks it down here.
i have a knack for languages, never really put it to use though. i will definitely be taking some courses in college for it and hopefully be fluent by the time i graduate.
i can't speak it very well, i just know certain words, but i have recently discovered (to my surprise) that i actually understand about 70% of what's being said if people are speaking it in my presence.
i used to think it was bull when someone would say, "oh i can understand it, but i can't speak it". i thought that was impossible, but it's definitely not.
oh yea and i learned a tad bit of conversational japanese when i was living there for 2 years, but i'm definitely a bit rusty with that. |
