No, he got your point perfectly, as did I. You simply missed ours. If I went around telling everybody that I had AIDS because I catch colds easily (which I don't, this is just an example), I'm fairly certain that somebody would eventually tell me to shove it up my ass.
That's because most people know what AIDS is. A lot of people have no ing clue what OCD really is or how serious it is, nor do they really understand the difference between sadness and clinical depression, or the difference between having ADD and being a lazy worthless face. And that's okay - just don't talk about it!
It's simply annoying - call it "OCD" on my part if you want. I call it pop psychology, and it's something that everyone with even the tiniest shred of knowledge about real psychology despises. And I admit, I only do know a tiny shred about it, but it's still enough to recognize this kind of Grade-A bull when I see it.
This has nothing to do with intellect. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, for example, that I work with people who don't know much about computers. That's my job, not theirs. It does bother me when people decide to sound off about something they don't even remotely understand, especially when they get defensive and lash out after being corrected. That's not necessarily stupidity, it's just ignorance combined with a lousy attitude, which in many ways is even worse than stupidity.
I'll keep the cucumber up my ass, thanks. It feels nice and it helps me keep perspective instead of falling into the blissful world of smug self-satisfaction. |
