same here considering most of it is actually tech house...i havent played as much of it lately. Of course i dont have numbers..but volume tends to mean demand, can we agree on this?

ill agree , if you are a dj and play it by itself. The production quality is usally unmatched, hence the layering possibilities tend to be endless. Every note, high hat, even the layers of white noise added make it more sophisticated than it really seems. Then again minimal is selling more than trance if you look at the numbers, so that says alot about interest...even your god pose dj's have added it in the rotations. Dont worry the fad is over say hello to dubstep.

dubstep is big in europe already.

at sonar barcelona there was a dubstep stage each night.

Can you please tell me if any of tracks on Tretemoeller's "The Last Resort" is actually minimal? If so, then which?
nefardec
none of the tracks on the very last resort belong to the 'genre' of minimal.

of course you might be able to describe them as 'minimalist' or subtle.

the album consists of chillout, ambient, tech house, and maybe what you would call dub techno

I don't like the "electronica" as it means everything and nothing at the same time. Just every electronic thing can be electronica, then why just simply don't call it electronic? :)
nefardec
i think the word electronica has a specific connotation of meaning something that is very eclectic and undefinable yet electronic. whenever i hear/see this word it cues me into the fact that the track is an oddity in some way
julien2
Exactly.

Electronica, originally was a term coined for the music made by the chemical brothers and fatboy slim to appeal to the masses. Catchy, breakbeat, fit a for a 4x4 ford commercial.

But now, I consider electronica to be a term for music that is not easily describable.

For sure, we can see that The Last Resort has electro, trance, dub, ambient...etc...

but the album got so much critical acclaim because it was different...thus the term electronica

Nathan Fake would electronica as well, even though, to be more precise, I would say he is nu-trance and IDM.

ok, now this thread is getting really confusing. The question was: "What is minimal" - and several people actually took a stab at explaining what it is (an art form, an elemental stripped deconstructed version of techno, blips and beeps (people hate this one), and then some people are trying to throw minimal into a sub-electronic category based on the fact that it isn't dance music, it's simply an art form for the listening.

I take my own views on minimal, yeah it's different, and it's not as "in your face" or catchy as some mainline trance or house acts, but I guess it does have its own place as an art form (musical art) and some people actually enjoy listening to it.

The political question I see as most pertinent at the moment is - what is this 'new wave' of the minimal movement doing to the well-established realm of techno and industrial? In other words, the influence of minimal is turning many artists 'on' to the minimal stage and they are not concentrating on the standard techno sound which has rocked clubs and shows for years. Many complain that the new 'minmal' movement is sweeping in with such force over the whole techno arena, that it's basically killing techno as we know / knew it. I have never been able to dance to minimal or 'rock out' to minimal, only listen to a very long and slowly progressing set while I sit or lay down and shut my eyes to really get into "minimal" music. It's taking the energy and the fury out of techno, as we once characterized much of this long-established musical genre (yeah we hate the word 'genre). It is impossible NOT to see the influence minimal has had/is having on the techno scene in general/specifically THIS scene (techno) as opposed to the trance scene, which is turning to more progressive tunes and branching out in many directions. I would like to hear more opinions/takes on this issue.

I always thought that there are Abstract or Experimental tags to describe such music. But I'm into EDM only for three years now, so it's more than possible, that I'm wrong about that.

Wow, I always associated a lot of Trentemollers stuff with minimal.

Now I want to know what really is minimal. The sounds of what I heard were so simple, quaint, and yet intricate.

hmm, i read about a bit, and checked ishkurs guide.

i sorta like listening or the concept of experiemental or quirky music. because it does have a beautiful or intreaging rebelious or unique sense to it.

especially if you listen to EDM alot :) u need something here or their to refresh yourself from the last 8 hrs of trance/psy/jung sets etc that you have been listening to that day :P

are their any good recommended torrents or artist albums/comps that i can get my hands on.. im interested in the even demo or very basic minimal minimal stuff too.. stuff that you dont even listen to in clubs or really have on to appreciate, but just for experimental appreciation sakes.....
