i'm actually going to cut against the grain here and say volume. it's all dependent on the style of music, but considering most of the time i listen to banging and/or driving dance music, volume is key.. or at least when listening on un-amped headphones (as previously stated, most soundsystems will go louder than ever really needed). a well compressed & mastered mp3 normalised to 0db makes for perfectly comfortable listening on my headphones, and it's often the case that i'll open up the wave on particularly quiet mp3s & ramp the volume up to get the full effect, even if it involves sacrificing a few odd peaks & spikes (which most of the time aren't audible anyway)
obviously if it's produced like or horribly distorted then it doesn't matter how loud it is. but small quality fluctuations i've never really had an ear for (i still have a hard time distinguishing 192kbs & upwards) |

most audio enhancer plugins boost certain frequencies and apply a bit of widening to those frequencies so lossy formats dont sound AS compressed.
some are also able to take a decent calculation at what information may have been cut out during mp3 conversion and fill it in to an extent. |

I like volume, but not in the stupid way a lot of people (the kind who have monstrous stereos in ty little hatchback cars) do. A lot of people seem to revel in volume for its own sake, perhaps just getting a kick (pun) out of the primal thump of bass. I like loud music so I can hear it properly, and be surrounded by it. |

| Sound quality. I'm a firm believer that an absence of subtlety is one of the main reasons why trance (and electronic music in general, perhaps) has lots its way over the years. Plus I'm quite capable of turning the volume up myself - I don't need tracks to be mastered so loud that it actually trashes the quality of the sound through clipping. |

I have to say that I can't stand low volume music. I always listen to music, be it dance music or classical, at a healthy volume where all the quality can be appreciated.
Everyone in this thread seems to be claiming quality over volume, but the fact is the quality can't be appreciated at low volumes. I shudder when I hear people listening to their music on laptop speakers.

I guess it comes down to whether you're referring to literal volume, or audio resolution (or however you would refer to it). |
